This educational session will focus on the unique design requirements of Type III construction related to required fire resistance and practical constructability for code compliance.  Topics will include fire-resistance-rating requirements for the interior and exterior, the impact of fire separation distance, implications of intersecting fire walls, and primary structural frame protection within exterior walls. 

Regional Online Event (PA & NJ) This presentation will cover some of the design considerations associated with mid-rise wood-frame buildings and will also focus on mid-rise mass timber construction. The presentation will also cover decisions that need to be made early in the design process, including grid layout, approach to achieving fire ratings, and lateral system selection.

May 20, 2025 - Regional Online Event (GA, AL, LA, MS, FL) This presentation will review the tall wood code provisions, including the three new construction types (IV-A, IV-B, and IV-C), and the technical research and testing that supported their adoption. The session will also cover critical aspects of design and construction unique to tall wood buildings, ranging from sprinkler requirements and shaft wall considerations to fire design for penetrations and acoustics performance.

May 21, 2025 - National Online Event. This presentation will introduce new provisions for CLT shear wall and diaphragm design, in the American Wood Council’s 2021 Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS).

June 11, 2025 - National Online Event. This course examines the critical role of envelope design in delivering healthy, safe, and durable buildings, focusing on wood construction—primarily light-frame wood systems. The session will highlight best practices in coordinating architectural, structural, and MEP systems while addressing challenges like vapor control and constructability specific to wood building systems.

July 9, 2025 - National Online Seminar. This seminar explores the emerging hybrid construction method combining mass timber and cold-formed steel (CFS) to optimize structural performance and cost-effectiveness. The presentation will also feature a detailed case study of the Bunker Hill Housing Redevelopment project in Boston, MA.

August 13, 2025 - National Online Seminar. his presentation will provide an introductory review of architectural considerations associated with wood framing. Fire protection and sprinklers, construction types, acoustics, and building envelopes in wood-frame structures will be reviewed, with an emphasis on cost-effective, code-compliant options for different building configurations.

August 19, 2025 - Regional Online Event (CA-South, AZ, NM) Join Mike Romanowski to learn about two important wood design topics: concealed spaces in light-frame and mass timber construction and tips to simplify mixed-use building analysis.

September 3, 2025 - National Online Event. This one-hour seminar will explore the cost drivers, value propositions, and design strategies that influence the financial viability of mass timber projects. Participants will learn how early design decisions impact cost efficiency, hear lessons learned from built case studies, and gain insight from cost comparisons with equivalent steel and concrete buildings.

September 10, 2025 - National Online Seminar. The session explores detailing strategies that support passive fire protection, including the use of char calculations, encapsulation materials, sealants, and connection geometry. The session will also examine available databases to further equip design professionals with the tools necessary to make informed decisions about fire-resistance connections for mass timber projects.

September 11, 2025 - Regional Online Seminar (MA, CT, ME, NH, RI, VT) This presentation will introduce the new tall wood code provisions and construction types, as well as the technical research and testing that supported their adoption.. It will also analyze reasons for vertical movement (short and long term), provide methods of calculating anticipated movement, highlight detailing options to minimize and accommodate movement, and discuss strategies implemented on tall mass timber projects completed in North America.

September 16, 2025 - Regional Online Event (KS, AR, MO, OK) This presentation will walk through early project decisions and design steps, focusing on how to optimize projects for mass timber and how one early decision can influence others and will introduce the new tall wood code provisions and construction types, as well as the technical research and testing that supported their adoption.

September 18, 2024 - Regional Online Seminar (DC, DE, MD, VA, WV) This presentation will examine early project decisions and design steps, focusing on how to optimize projects for mass timber to avoid price premiums and take an in-depth look at biogenic carbon accounting, including when and how it should be counted, as well as a discussion of end-of-life assumptions.
