Tour of Clemson Forestry and Environmental Conservation Building

Regional In-Person Tour (Clemson, SC)
This unique educational event will provide an in-depth look at Clemson University’s new Forestry and Environmental Conservation building while still under construction. This four-story, 85,000-sqft building, which includes classrooms, lecture halls, research labs, staff offices and assembly areas, features three stories of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glue-laminated timber (glulam) over a one-story concrete podium. Mass timber was selected to provide a real-world example of the sustainable building materials that are central to the University’s Department of Forestry and Environmental Conservation. Attendees will tour the site with members of the project team, who will share strategies for successful, code-compliant mass timber buildings, including insights on design, detailing, and construction techniques. The tour format encourages questions and discussion, and attendees can expect to leave with knowledge of the project’s design, execution, and factors that influenced material and detail selection.
Please join us for lunch following the tour.
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss typical construction practices for mass timber projects, including safety best practices, installation efficiency, and coordination with follow-on trades.
- Highlight a variety of structural and architectural uses of CLT and glulam through an in-person tour of an under-construction project, highlighting the sustainable benefits of mass timber for occupants and visitors.
- Demonstrate connection detailing techniques used in code-compliant mass timber buildings to ensure appropriate structural capacity, fire resistance, and consideration of the project construction type.
- Explain the diverse methods of project development and approaches used by the design team, including owners, contractors, architects, and engineers, to achieve a successful mass timber project.
