Classrooms to Cafeterias:  Mass Timber Design in Modern Schools

This course explores the growing use of mass timber in K-12 school design, with a focus on the key drivers influencing its adoption—speed of construction, sustainability, cost-efficiency, and code compliance. Attendees will gain insight into the national school construction market, understand how IBC provisions support the use of mass timber in Types III, IV, and V construction, and compare costs and building configurations across material systems.

Additional topics include fire performance and code allowances, acoustic and durability considerations, structural design strategies for long spans in gymnasiums and cafeterias, and practical tips for space planning and integration. The session concludes with case studies that illustrate how mass timber is being successfully implemented in school projects across the country.

Tour of Founders Hall at University of Washington

This unique educational event will provide an in-depth look at Founders Hall at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business, constructed in 2022. Designers of the five-story, 84,800-square-foot building used a hybrid structure:  Type IV-HT construction for the mass timber portion—a glue-laminated timber (glulam) post and beam frame with cross-laminated timber (CLT) decking—and Type I-B for the large assembly spaces, built with concrete and steel. Attendees will tour the site with members of the project team, who will share strategies for successful, code-compliant mass timber projects, including insights into the design, detailing, and construction techniques used throughout the building. The tour format encourages questions and discussion, and attendees can expect to learn about the project’s design, execution, and factors that influenced material and detail selection.
