Mass Timber Building Tour: South San Francisco Wellness Center

This unique educational event will provide an in-depth look at the all-mass timber South San Francisco Center, showcasing mass timber’s application in a healthcare facility. Designers of the building utilized glue-laminated timber (glulam) columns and beams and cross-laminated timber (CLT) for floor plates to create a multi-purpose space that consists of medical offices and a clinic dedicated to community wellness support. Attendees will tour the site and learn about detailing and construction techniques utilized throughout the building. The tour format encourages questions and discussion, and attendees can expect to leave not only with insights on the project’s design and execution but also factors that influenced material and detail selection.

Chelsea is a licensed Structural Engineer in the State of California. She received her BS in Engineering from Harvey Mudd College and MS in Civil Engineering from Stanford University. Chelsea spent nine years in structural design consulting prior to joining WoodWorks. Her experience covers a variety of building types, including residential, higher education, and retrofit of existing and historic structures. Chelsea is passionate about sustainability and the use of wood as a building material to reduce the embodied carbon emissions of structures.

Learning Objectives:

• Discuss typical construction practices for mass timber projects specific to exposed mass timber and design for safety and wellness in a healthcare setting.

• Highlight a variety of structural and architectural uses of glulam and CLT through an in-person tour of a community-focused project, demonstrating how wood products can be used in modern, highly efficient buildings to promote biophilic spaces for occupants.

• Understand connection detailing techniques used in code-compliant mass timber buildings to ensure appropriate structural capacity and fire resistance, based on the construction type.

• Identify methods of project development and approaches used by the design team—from owners to fabricators—that contribute to project success.
