Column Bears with Custom Standoff

Column bears on custom steel standoff assembly consisting of upper and lower bearing plates separated by a standoff. Upper bearing plate has knife plate or pipe for connection to column. Column is positively connected to knife plate or pipe with dowel-type fasteners. Lower bearing plate is connected to concrete with post-installed anchors. Grout is provided below lower bearing plate for elevation control.

Purpose: Transfer of vertical load from wood column to concrete.

Design Notes

  • Capacity of connection is dependent on parallel-to-grain capacity of the column.
  • Consider reducing upper bearing plate dimensions relative to column to accommodate potential column shrinkage.
  • Standoff allows for architectural finishes and elevates base of column to reduce exposure to potential moisture sources.
