Shaft Wall Assembly at Bottom of Shaft with Beam Support

Description: Required to provide a rated base to the shaft without using the 3-ply CLT floor to support it; glulam beams support the concrete-filled metal deck.

Purpose: Maintain rating of base of shaft wall assembly.

Design Notes

  • Glulam beam used to support the shaft wall and the concrete-filled metal deck shaft floor based on char factor compliance for wall rating.
  • CLT floor outboard of shaft wall assembly to maintain shaft wall rating without CLT support.

Acoustics:

  • Shaft wall assembly estimated at STC 39-45 depending on layers of gypsum for shaft rating CLT floor 3-ply (3.5″) with 3/4″ acoustic mat and 3″ concrete = IIC 45 & STC 53.

Fire:

  • Can be used to meet any shaft wall rating requirement based on size of glulam and associated char factor.
