Lumen at Beacon Park is an urban revitalization project developed to anchor an emerging downtown neighborhood, spur economic development, and provide a quality space for the community. Central to its modern geometry are strong cantilevered roof forms and a grand stair leading to a green roof deck. While designers initially chose wood because it was sustainable, cost effective and could be used for both interior and exterior applications, its warmth and beauty set the building apart. Wood is used for exterior cladding, interior wall paneling, mechanical louvers, and an undulating louvered ceiling system. Louver arrangement was carefully designed for optimum acoustics, and the custom louvers and boards were all hand-fabricated, finished and sealed for longevity by local artisans. The indoor/outdoor space accommodates a variety of uses, including restaurant seating, musical performances, a farmers’ market and community meetings. Wood finishes extend seamlessly from the outside in, adding a fresh, natural aesthetic. 8,895 sf/Type VB construction
