Teams working to maximize the benefits of mass timber while managing costs require a nuanced understanding of the design, procurement, fabrication, and construction process. For example, keeping mass timber volumes to a minimum is key to cost-effectiveness, but can it be to the detriment of other systems in the building? How should connections be designed and detailed with cost in mind while factoring in manufacturing and fabrication capabilities, constructability and tolerances, and code and design requirements? What influence should transportation, material handling, and on-site logistics (including construction schedule targets) have on building layout and design? Are there key performance indicators that can be applied to projects to evaluate whether they’re in an appropriate range at first glance? This webinar will explore the financial implications of crucial design decisions, equipping architects, structural engineers, contractors, and real estate developers with the practical know-how necessary to create cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and structurally sound mass timber buildings.

Ricky McLain, PE, SE | WoodWorks
Ricky leads WoodWorks’ Growth and Innovation Program, working on project technical design support, resource creation and growth opportunity facilitation related to areas such as tall mass timber construction, builder’s risk insurance for mass timber projects, and industrialized/offsite buildings. He supports the AECD community both directly and collaboratively with WoodWorks Regional Directors, providing in- depth technical design assistance. Ricky also has extensive experience in lead engineer roles related to structural design, project management and construction administration. Ricky is Executive Director of the Structural Engineers Association of Vermont, and a member of numerous committees and councils related to building design.
Nicholas Sills | Whirlwind Consultants
Principal of Whirlwind Consultants, Nicholas Sills has more than 15 years of prefabricated timber construction experience, specializing in value-added wood products, specifically mass timber. Nicholas has worked on marquee mass timber projects in Europe and North America and helped launch cross-laminated timber (CLT) products in North America, – redeveloping glulam markets and setting new application standards with modern design and production processes. Nicholas has a Master’s in Wood Sciences from Bern University of Sciences in Switzerland, specializing in Timber Engineering.
