Wood Diaphragm Deflections and Flexibility

Sub Title Goes Here

In the design of many wood buildings, the flexibility of horizontal force-distributing diaphragms is given little consideration. However, in certain building configurations, diaphragm deflections are a critical aspect of structural design. This webinar will review the conditions under which designers should consider the deflections of structural wood panel-sheathed diaphragms, and how these deflections help determine the classification of a diaphragm as rigid, flexible, or semi-rigid. Another important consideration is the impact of the location and detailing of vertical shear walls on the horizontal distribution of forces in the diaphragms, which will be illustrated through the results of a design study. Finally, the speakers will review methods available to stiffen diaphragms and reduce total deflections when needed.

At WoodWorks, he provides project support and education to individuals designing wood buildings and oversees the development of technical educational content.

Terry Malone, PE, SE, Senior Technical Director, Mass TImber | Woodworks

Terry Malone is a licensed civil and structural engineer in the State of Washington and Senior Technical Director of Project Resources and Solutions Division. Prior to joining WoodWorks, he was a principal in consulting structural engineering firms in Washington and Oregon and also conducted third party structural plan reviews. He also served as a faculty member at St. Martin’s College (University) in Lacey, Washington. Terry has over 40 years of wood design experience and has taken an active role as a presenter providing seminars at state and local ICC chapters and professional engineering organizations with focus on understanding lateral force resisting systems. Terry is author of The Analysis of Irregular Shaped Structures: Wood Diaphragms and Shear Walls, published by McGraw-Hill, ICC SKGA, and ICC.
