In response to the growing use of off-site construction methods, this course will delve into the intricate detailing considerations essential for building performance. Components, systems of components, and full modules are being constructed off-site in efforts to reduce construction schedules and on-site labor, improve material efficiency, and increase worker safety. Although the choice to frame on-site versus implementing some level of prefabrication depends on many factors, it is important to understand how all the pieces come together to ensure occupant comfort and safety. This presentation will explore various levels of off-site wood-frame construction on multi-family and commercial projects, highlighting ways design teams can ensure structural integrity, high levels of acoustic and thermal performance, and ways to introduce the natural beauty of wood into the built environment to create comfortable and sustainable spaces.
By the end of the course, you will be able to do the following:
- Highlight the various components that are typically prefabricated and the role of the design team in increasing building performance during its end use.
- Demonstrate wood-framed alternates to concrete and masonry shaft walls, highlighting code compliance for life safety and opportunities for exposed wood structure.
- Discuss key details that need to be addressed regarding prefabricated components to ensure long-term structural stability and envelope performance.
- Review current code-mandated inspections for off-site building components to ensure occupants will be moving into code-compliant spaces.
