Introduction to Wood: Architectural Design Considerations
An introductory course on code-compliant light-frame wood construction including construction types, fire protection, acoustics, and building envelopes
This presentation will provide an introductory review of architectural considerations associated with wood framing. Fire protection and sprinklers, construction types, acoustics, and building envelopes in wood-frame structures will be reviewed, with an emphasis on cost-effective, code-compliant options for different building configurations.
By the end of the course, you will be able to do the following:
- Review wood’s role and allowable uses under current building codes.
- Highlight code provisions specific to allowable wood-frame building sizes, including sprinklers and construction types.
- Explore the variety of details and assemblies available for fire- and acoustically-tested wood-frame walls, floors and roofs.
- Discuss building enclosure design fundamentals and the role that each control layer has on durability of exterior assemblies.
