SUMMARY:Mid-Rise Mass Timber: Navigating Construction Type Selection
DESCRIPTION:Regional Online Seminar (KS\, AR\, IA\, MO\, NE\, OK)\n\n\nOpportunities for using mass timber construction for new building projects have never been greater now that the International Building Code (IBC) allows up to 18 stories with these materials. However\, with expanded code options\, selecting the right construction type is crucial to making a project pencil . This course focuses on mid-rise mass timber construction\, highlighting examples in the five- to eight-story range—including office\, mixed-use\, and multi-family projects. Discussion will help to inform decisions on how to incorporate mass timber based on a project’s intended height\, area\, and occupancies. The presentation will also cover decisions that need to be made early in the design process\, including grid layout\, approach to achieving fire ratings\, and lateral system selection. \n  \nSpeaker: Jason Bahr\, PE | WoodWorks \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 1.0 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 1.0 PDH credit or 0.1 ICC credit \n  \nOnline Attendees: \n\nWoodWorks will send each attendee a certificate of completion within 2 weeks via email.\nPlease note that to receive a certificate\, attendees must stay for the duration of the event.\n\n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nMary Schramka | mary.schramka@woodworks.org | 708.204.9578 \n  \nImage: 1030 Music Row / Anecdote Architectural Experiences / StructureCraft / Photo Andrew Keithly

SUMMARY:Mass Timber in Multi-Family Housing: Is It a Good Fit for Your Project?
DESCRIPTION:Regional In-Person Seminar (Denver\, CO)\n\n\nMass timber is often associated with the stigma of being more expensive than other building materials\, leading to the assumption it is only suitable for unique\, one-off projects. But do its other benefits create opportunities for overall cost efficiency? \nTypical multi-family housing developments are in the 4-5 story range\, often utilizing podium or pedestal construction with 1-2 stories of steel and concrete topped with 3-5 stories of light-frame wood. Historically\, building codes have required steel or concrete for taller structures\, creating a gap in housing development between roughly 6 and 12 stories. \nThis presentation explores whether mass timber can make financial sense in mid-rise multi-family projects and how new provisions in the 2021 International Building Code open opportunities for housing in the 6–18 story range. \n  \nSpeaker: Emmy Hoa Tran\, PE | WoodWorks \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 1 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 1 PDH credits or 0.1 ICC credits \n  \nLocation: \nBurwell Center for Career Achievement \n2190 E Asbury Ave\, Denver\, CO 80210 \nRoom #340 \n  \nParking Options: Transpo Options.pdf \n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nJaime Krohn\, CMP | jaime@woodworks.org | (312) 841-8272 \n  \nImage: The Canyons\, Kaiser+Path\, Cantena Consulting Engineers\, Photo Jeremy Bittermann

SUMMARY:Coast to Coast: Tall Timber Code and Design in California and New York
DESCRIPTION:Regional Online Seminar (CA-North\, NV\, UT\, NY)\n\n\nWith adoption of tall timber provisions in the 2021 International Building Code\, jurisdictions across the U.S. now permit mass timber buildings up to 18 stories\, though implementation varies by region. California and New York have adopted these provisions with state and local amendments that directly influence design strategy\, detailing\, and coordination. This bi-coastal presentation provides an overview of tall timber code pathways and key design considerations. It also compares provisions in the California Building Code and New York State Building Code. Key topics include construction types\, height and area limits\, fire-resistance requirements\, and timber exposure allowances. The session will examine design considerations for tall timber buildings\, including structural systems\, fire performance\, and regional factors such as seismic demands in California and weather protection in New York. Built project examples will be shared for inspiration and to highlight opportunities unique to tall timber construction. Attendees will gain practical insight into navigating tall timber code requirements and identifying issues to address early in design to support more informed project development. \nSeminar begins at 10:00am PT and 1:00pm ET. \n  \nSpeakers: Chelsea Drenick\, SE and Momo Sun\, PE\, P.Eng.\, LEED Green Associate | WoodWorks \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 1.5 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 1.5 PDH credits or 0.15 ICC credits for the seminar \n  \nOnline Attendees: \n\nWoodWorks will send each attendee a certificate of completion within 2 weeks via email.\nPlease note that to receive a certificate\, attendees must stay for the duration of the event.\n\n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nLeeAnn Charpentier\, CMP | leeann.charpentier@woodworks.org | (301) 633-0330 \n  \nImage: 1510 Webster / oWOW / DCI Engineers / Photo Andrew Nelson
