SUMMARY:Mass Timber in Education: UW Founders Hall Tour and Design Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Regional In-Person Seminar + Tour (Seattle\, WA)\nClassrooms to Cafeterias:  Mass Timber Design in Modern Schools  \nThis course explores the growing use of mass timber in K-12 school design\, with a focus on the key drivers influencing its adoption—speed of construction\, sustainability\, cost-efficiency\, and code compliance. Attendees will gain insight into the national school construction market\, understand how IBC provisions support the use of mass timber in Types III\, IV\, and V construction\, and compare costs and building configurations across material systems. \nAdditional topics include fire performance and code allowances\, acoustic and durability considerations\, structural design strategies for long spans in gymnasiums and cafeterias\, and practical tips for space planning and integration. The session concludes with case studies that illustrate how mass timber is being successfully implemented in school projects across the country. \nTour of Founders Hall at University of Washington \nThis unique educational event will provide an in-depth look at Founders Hall at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business\, constructed in 2022. Designers of the five-story\, 84\,800-square-foot building used a hybrid structure:  Type IV-HT construction for the mass timber portion—a glue-laminated timber (glulam) post and beam frame with cross-laminated timber (CLT) decking—and Type I-B for the large assembly spaces\, built with concrete and steel. Attendees will tour the site with members of the project team\, who will share strategies for successful\, code-compliant mass timber projects\, including insights into the design\, detailing\, and construction techniques used throughout the building. The tour format encourages questions and discussion\, and attendees can expect to learn about the project’s design\, execution\, and factors that influenced material and detail selection. \n  \nAgenda: \nSeminar: 11:00 am – 12:00pm \nLunch and Tour: 12:00pm – 1:00pm \nAllow 30 minutes for parking\, walking to Founders Hall \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 2.0 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 2.0 PDH credits or 0.20 ICC credits \n  \nSpeaker: \nMichael Muller\, PE\, SE | WoodWorks \nMichael is a licensed engineer in California and Washington with more than a decade of experience working as a structural engineering consultant based in the Pacific Northwest. Over his career\, Michael has successfully managed many acclaimed projects in the residential\, retail\, hospitality\, and office market sectors. He brings a keen eye for efficiency in materials and construction and experience working internationally in parts of the world known for uniquely challenging seismic and other weather or nature-related extremes. Michael is committed to helping create a future world that fosters sustainable solutions. \n  \nLocation: \nUniversity of Washington\, Founders Hall\n4215 E.
