SUMMARY:Construction Type Selection & Multi-Family Housing + MSU Tour
DESCRIPTION:Regional In-Person Seminar + Tour (East Lansing\, MI)\nJoin us for a unique two-part event featuring an educational seminar on mass timber design\, followed by a firsthand look at Michigan State University’s STEM Teaching and Learning Facility. \nMid-Rise Mass Timber: Construction Type Selection & Opportunities for Multi-Family Housing (2.0 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 2.0 PDH credits or 0.20 ICC credits) \nOpportunities for mid-rise mass timber construction are expanding\, particularly in multi-family housing\, as recent International Building Code (IBC) updates allow mass timber in buildings up to 18 stories. This session will explore construction type selection\, critical early design decisions\, and the use of mass timber in 4- to 12-story residential and mixed-use projects—including hybrid systems that combine mass timber with light-frame wood construction to address the “missing middle” in housing. Participants will review key code considerations\, including construction types\, allowable heights and areas\, and fire-resistance requirements\, with a focus on strategies for exposed timber. \nTour MSU’s Mass Timber STEM Teaching and Learning Facility (1.0 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 1.0 PDH credit or 0.10 ICC credit) \nFollowing the presentation\, attendees can tour MSU’s 121\,000 square-foot STEM Building\, which pioneered the first significant use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) in the state. The project features three stories of glulam post-and-beam construction with steel diagonal bracing\, CLT floor and roof decks\, and CLT walls in egress stairs. The tour format encourages questions and discussion\, and attendees will learn about the project’s design\, execution\, and various detailing and construction techniques utilized throughout the building. \nJoin us after the tour for a networking happy hour at Dublin Square from 4:30 – 6:00pm. \n\nSchedule: \n12:30 pm – Registration Opens | Lunch provided for attendees \n1:00 – 3:00 – Presentation \n3:00 – 4:00 – Tour \n\n4:30 – 6:00- Happy Hour \n\n\n \nProduced in collaboration with MassTimber@MSU. \n  \nSpeaker: Anthony Harvey\, PE\, WoodWorks \n  \nCredits: 3.0 (3.0 HSW) – Attendees can Earn 2.0 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 2.0 PDH credits or 0.20 ICC credits for the seminar + 1.0 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 1.0 PDH credit or 0.10 ICC credit for the tour. \n\n\n  \nLocation: \nMichigan State University (STEM Building) \n642 Red Cedar Rd \nEast Lansing\, MI 48824 \nSTEM Room 1202 \nEvent Parking: \nParking: Lot 79 – the Spartan Stadium lot – located directly west of the STEM building. SUMMARY:Tall Wood Construction + Michigan State University STEM Facility Site Tour
DESCRIPTION:Regional In-Person Seminar + Tour (East Lansing\, MI)\n\n\nA New Path Forward for Tall Wood Construction + Michigan State University STEM Facility Site Tour \nSeminar\, 10:00 am – 12:30 pm EDT \nModern building products and evolving codes have opened the door to many new opportunities for construction\, one of which is tall wood. In 2019\, the International Code Council (ICC) approved a set of proposals to allow tall wood buildings of up to 18 stories as part of the 2021 International Building Code (IBC). This presentation will provide an in-depth review of the tall wood code provisions\, from a review of the technical research and testing that supported their adoption to the methods of addressing the new requirements. \nMSU STEM Building Tour\, 1:00 pm – 2 pm EDT \nJoin project team members for a tour of Michigan State University’s new STEM Teaching and Learning Facility\, which includes two mass timber wings flanking the decommissioned\, revitalized\, and repurposed Shaw Lane Power Plant. \n  \nSchedule: \n9:30 – 10:00am: Registration \n10:00 – 12:30pm: Presentation \n12:30 – 1:00pm: Lunch \n1:00 – 2:00pm: Tour \n  \n \nThis seminar is supported in part by MassTimber@MSU\, a program at Michigan State University that leverages research\, education\, outreach\, communications\, policy\, and partnerships to advance sustainable mass timber construction and manufacture in Michigan and the surrounding region. For more information visit www.masstimber.msu.edu \n  \nView this project on WIN – WoodWorks Innovation Network \n  \nSpeaker: Anthony Harvey\, PE\, WoodWorks \n  \nAttendees can earn: \n\n2 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 2 PDH credits or 0.2 ICC credits (seminar)\n1 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 1 PDH credit or 0.1 ICC credit (tour)\n\n  \nEvent Parking: \nParking: Lot 79 – the Spartan Stadium lot – located directly west of the STEM building.
