SUMMARY:Tour of Assembly Studios Bandshell Project
DESCRIPTION:Regional In-Person Tour (Doraville\, GA)\n\n\nThis unique educational event will provide an in-depth look at Assembly Studio’s new bandshell project. The 4\,000-square-foot bandshell at Atlanta’s 120-acre Gray Media / Assembly Studios production park features an innovative Chebyshev gridshell made from elastically bent mass timber members anchored to a doubly curved glulam ring beam—reported to be the longest-bending active timber gridshell in North America. Designed as both a 2026 FIFA World Cup™ viewing venue and a long-term performing arts centerpiece\, the structure uses a compression ring and two minimal foundation points to create a lightweight\, floating canopy over the stage. Custom stainless steel roof shingles will reflect changing light patterns throughout the day\, enhancing the visual experience. \nAttendees will tour the site with members of the project team\, who will share strategies for successful\, code-compliant mass timber projects and insights into the project’s design\, execution\, and factors that influenced material and detail selection. \nPlease join us after the tour for a networking happy hour. \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 1.0 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 1.0 PDH credit or 0.10 ICC credit. \n  \n\nSpeaker: \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLaura Cullen\, PE | WoodWorks \nLaura is passionate about educating others on the benefits of building with wood. Prior to joining WoodWorks\, she worked as a structural designer for seven years. Her previous structural design experience focused primarily on mixed-use and multi-family structures\, as well as K-12 schools. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology\, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Berry College. Laura is based in the Atlanta area\, where she is a member of CREW Atlanta\, a business network for the commercial real estate market\, and a 2018 graduate of Leadership CREW. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nTour Meeting Location: \n2582 Assembly Boulevard \nDoraville\, GA \nParking: \nFree street parking or parking garages available. \nMap & Directions \n  \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDiscuss typical construction practices for mass timber projects\, including safety best practices\, installation efficiency\, and coordination with follow-on trades.\n\n\nHighlight a variety of structural and architectural uses of glulam through an in-person tour of an under-construction project\, highlighting the biophilic benefits of exposed mass timber for occupants and visitors.\n\n\nDemonstrate connection detailing techniques used in code-compliant mass timber buildings to ensure appropriate structural capacity\, fire resistance\, and consideration of the project construction type.\n\n\nExplain the diverse methods of project development and approaches used by the design team\, including owners\, contractors\, architects\, and engineers\, to achieve a successful mass timber project.\n\n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nLeeAnn Charpentier\, CMP | leeann.charpentier@woodworks.org | (301) 633-0330 \n  \nRendering: Assembly Studios Bandshell / Zach Rolen
