Submissions for the California Mass Timber Building Competition are no longer being accepted. For background on the competition and upcoming announcements, visit the California Government Operations Agency (GovOps) website.
The competition, hosted by GovOps and administered by WoodWorks, will award a total of $500,000 in grants to be distributed between two or more project teams that present viable and repeatable mass timber solutions for commercial or multi-family projects in California. The grants will fund activities that include cost studies, permitting fees, life cycle assessment studies, and information exchange sessions with code officials.
Contact WoodWorks for project assistance:
WoodWorks was chosen to administer the program because of our technical expertise in the design, engineering and construction of mass timber buildings. Because we are administering the competition but not evaluating submissions, we are able to provide project support to teams developing proposals. To request assistance with a competition project, please email .
Although the competition deadline has passed, we are available to provide free project support related to other commercial and multi-family wood buildings, including mass timber. Contact the regional director nearest you or email .

“This competition is designed to inspire innovation and harness the enormous environmental and economic potential of mass timber in California,” said Jennifer Cover, WoodWorks president and chief executive officer. “Mass timber can help California advance its climate change and green building objectives, and also has the potential to help reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires in the state by creating a market incentive for forest thinning and other landscape restoration efforts.”
