SUMMARY:Mid-Rise Wood Design
DESCRIPTION:Regional In-Person Seminar (Philadelphia\, PA )\n\n\nAs cities seek increased density as a way to address urban population growth\, many building designers and developers are looking to mid-rise wood construction as a cost-effective\, code-compliant and sustainable solution. This presentation will cover some of the design considerations associated with mid-rise wood-frame buildings\, including how to maximize height and area through the use of sprinklers\, open frontage\, sloping sites\, podiums and mezzanines. Construction types will be reviewed\, with an emphasis on opportunities for wood use in types III and V. \nOpportunities for using mass timber construction for new building projects have never been greater now that the International Building Code (IBC) allows up to 18 stories of these materials. However\, with expanded code options\, selecting the right construction type is crucial to making a project pencil. This course focuses on mid-rise mass timber construction\, highlighting examples in the five- to eight-story range—including office\, mixed-use\, and multi-family projects. Discussion will help to inform decisions on how to incorporate mass timber based on a project’s intended height\, area\, and occupancies. The presentation will also cover decisions that need to be made early in the design process\, including grid layout\, approach to achieving fire ratings\, and lateral system selection. \n  \nLunch will be provided. \n  \nHost: Shannon Williams\, PE | WoodWorks \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 2.0 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 2.0 PDH credits or 0.2 ICC credits \n  \nLocation: \nMaggiano’s Little Italy\n1201 Filbert St\nPhiladelphia\, PA 19107\nMap & Directions \nEvent Parking & Transit:\nThe closest parking garage is Parkway Parking garage at 12th & Filbert\nApproximately 1 ½ blocks from 13th St Station \n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nLeeAnn Charpentier\, CMP | leeann.charpentier@woodworks.org | (301) 633-0330 \n  \nImage: Thomas Logan / Pivot North Architects / Axiom / Chad Case Visuals

SUMMARY:Designing and Building with Mass Timber: Design\, Planning and Performance
DESCRIPTION:Regional In-Person Seminar (New Rochelle\, NY)\n\n\nHow can architects\, engineers\, and contractors collaborate to meet the growing demand for mass timber buildings? While developers across the country are pursuing mass timber projects\, firms have varying degrees of familiarity with the products and practicalities of designing\, sourcing\, and building a modern mass timber structure. \nThis presentation builds on the spirit of shared learning within the mass timber community to provide an overview of products\, planning\, design\, and implementation techniques to maximize the benefits these buildings can deliver. The discussion will include: \n\nBest practices for interaction between manufacturer\, design team\, and pre-construction manager that can lead to cost efficiency and safety on-site\n\n\nPotential construction schedule savings and construction fire safety practices when using prefabricated mass timber elements\n\n\nMass timber’s benefits\, including structural versatility\, prefabrication\, lighter carbon footprint\, and reduced labor costs\n\n  \nPlease join us for lunch before the seminar. \n  \nHost: Momo Sun\, PE\, PEng\, LEED Green Associate | WoodWorks \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 2.0 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 2.0 PDH credits or 0.2 ICC credits \n  \nLocation: \nTown House Kitchen + Drinks \n559 Main St \nNew Rochelle\, NY 10801 \n  \nEvent Parking Options: There are several municipal garages near the venue. Visit https://www.townhousekd.com/parking/ for more information. \n  \nThe venue is approximately 0.3 miles/8 mins walk from the New Rochelle train station. \n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nLeeAnn Charpentier\, CMP | leeann.charpentier@woodworks.org | (301) 633-0330 \n  \nImage: Nanotronics Smart Factory / Rogers Partners / Silman / Photo Albert Vecerka
