SUMMARY:Mass Timber Structural Design: Engineering Modern Timber Structures
DESCRIPTION:Regional Online Seminar (OR\, HI\, ID-South)\n\n\nThis presentation will provide a detailed look at the structural design processes associated with a variety of mass timber products\, including glued-laminated timber (glulam)\, cross-laminated timber (CLT)\, and nail-laminated timber (NLT). Applications for the use of these products in gravity force-resisting systems under modern building codes will be discussed. Other technical topics will include mass timber floor panel vibration criteria\, connection options and design considerations\, and an introduction to lateral systems common in mass timber buildings. Mass timber framing components are often left exposed to act as a finish while taking advantage of their aesthetics. As such\, they are often required to provide a fire-resistance rating demonstrating their ability to maintain structural integrity in the event of a fire. This session will also discuss structural design of mass timber elements under fire conditions. \n  \nSpeaker: Kate Carrigg\, PE | WoodWorks \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 2.0 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 2.0 PDH credits or 0.2 ICC credits \n  \nOnline Attendees: \n\nWoodWorks will send each attendee a certificate of completion within 2 weeks via email.\nPlease note that to receive a certificate\, attendees must stay for the duration of the event.\n\n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nJaime Krohn\, CMP | jaime@woodworks.org | (312) 841-8272 \n  \nImage: Platte Fifteen / OZ Architecture / KL&A Engineers and Builders / photo JC Buck

SUMMARY:Mass Timber in Multi-family Construction: Mid-Rise and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Regional In-Person Seminar (Seattle\, WA)\n\n\nCan mass timber make financial sense for mid-rise multi-family construction? What new opportunities does the 2021 International Building Code create for mass timber housing in the 6 to 18-story range? While mass timber is often associated with one-off projects that celebrate innovation over repeatability\, options for multi-family buildings that provide a strong return on investment have never been greater—if a designer understands how to leverage the benefits of these materials in the context of the new mass timber construction types. This presentation will review decisions that are key to the viability of mass timber multi-family projects\, including construction type selection\, grid layout\, approach to achieving fire-resistance ratings\, lateral system selection\, and acoustics. \n  \nSpeaker: Michael Muller\, PE\, SE | WoodWorks \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 2.0 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 2.0 PDH credits or 0.2 ICC credits \n  \nLocation: \nNational Nordic Museum \n2655 NW Market Street \nSeattle\, WA 98107 \nClassroom 1 \nMap/Directions \nParking: The National Nordic Museum’s parking lot is located on the south side of the building and can be accessed from the corner of NW Market St and 28th Ave NW. SUMMARY:Realizing Mass Timber’s Benefits: Key Design Decisions and Carbon Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Regional Online Seminar (DC\, DE\, MD\, VA\, WV)\n\n\nAs interest in and use of mass timber in the U.S. has grown\, so too has interest in pushing these timber structures to greater heights. Using international examples of successful tall wood buildings as precedent\, some designers have proposed tall wood projects in the states using a project-specific performance-based design approach. In order to provide a uniform set of code provisions for these tall wood buildings\, the International Code Council established an ad hoc committee on tall wood buildings that proposed a set of code changes allowing up to 18 stories of mass timber construction. Those code changes were announced as approved in January 2019 and will become part of the 2021 International Building Code. Following a brief discussion of history and motivators\, this presentation will introduce the new tall wood code provisions and construction types\, as well as the technical research and testing that supported their adoption. \n  \nSpeaker: John O’Donald II\, PE | WoodWorks \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 2.0 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 2.0 PDH credits or 0.2 ICC credits \n  \nOnline Attendees: \n\nWoodWorks will send each attendee a certificate of completion within 2 weeks via email.\nPlease note that to receive a certificate\, attendees must stay for the duration of the event.\n\n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nLeeAnn Charpentier\, CMP | leeann.charpentier@woodworks.org | (301) 633-0330 \n  \nImage: INTRO Cleveland / Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture / Forefront Structural Engineers / Fast + Epp / photo Nick Johnson\, Tour D Space
