SUMMARY:Mass Timber Tour: Upper Macungie Township Community Lifestyle Center
DESCRIPTION:Regional In-Person Tour (Allentown\, PA)\nThis unique educational event will showcase one of North America’s longest timber spans\, currently being built in Pennsylvania’s fast-growing Upper Macungie Township. Totaling 188\,000 square feet\, the Upper Macungie Township Community Lifestyle Center is a community hub comprising an indoor soccer field\, two flex gyms\, and an amenity building. \nThe focal point is the 130\,000-square-foot soccer field\, where hybrid glulam-steel portal frames spanning 280 feet—one of the longest timber truss clear-spans in North America—were engineered to meet the architect’s vision of an efficient yet visually appealing structure. The basketball court structures were designed with hybrid glulam-steel trusses clear-spanning up to 140 feet\, supported by a glulam frame. \nAttendees will get an up-close look at the design and construction challenges the architect\, engineer\, and contractor overcame to achieve a timber span of this scale. \nPlease join us for lunch after the tour. This event will be held entirely outdoors\, so we recommend dressing comfortably for the weather! \n  \nPPE: This is an active jobsite. Accessibility will be limited. PPE required. Please bring your own PPE\, a limited amount will be available onsite. \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 1.5 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 1.5 PDH credits or 0.15 ICC credits \n  \nSpeaker: Shannon Williams\, PE | WoodWorks \n  \nLocation: \nUpper Macungie Township Community Lifestyle Center \n340 Grange Road \nAllentown\, PA \n  \nParking available on site \n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nLeeAnn Charpentier\, CMP | leeann.charpentier@woodworks.org | (301) 633-0330 \n  \nImage: FLOR Projects / StructureCraft

SUMMARY:Mass Timber in Multi-Family Housing: Is It a Good Fit for Your Project?
DESCRIPTION:Regional In-Person Seminar (Denver\, CO)\n\n\nMass timber is often associated with the stigma of being more expensive than other building materials\, leading to the assumption it is only suitable for unique\, one-off projects. But do its other benefits create opportunities for overall cost efficiency? \nTypical multi-family housing developments are in the 4-5 story range\, often utilizing podium or pedestal construction with 1-2 stories of steel and concrete topped with 3-5 stories of light-frame wood. Historically\, building codes have required steel or concrete for taller structures\, creating a gap in housing development between roughly 6 and 12 stories. \nThis presentation explores whether mass timber can make financial sense in mid-rise multi-family projects and how new provisions in the 2021 International Building Code open opportunities for housing in the 6–18 story range. \n  \nSpeaker: Emmy Hoa Tran\, PE | WoodWorks \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 1 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 1 PDH credits or 0.1 ICC credits \n  \nLocation: \nBurwell Center for Career Achievement \n2190 E Asbury Ave\, Denver\, CO 80210 \nRoom #340 \n  \nParking Options: Transpo Options.pdf \n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nJaime Krohn\, CMP | jaime@woodworks.org | (312) 841-8272 \n  \nImage: The Canyons\, Kaiser+Path\, Cantena Consulting Engineers\, Photo Jeremy Bittermann

SUMMARY:Mid-Rise Mass Timber: Navigating Construction Type Selection
DESCRIPTION:Regional Online Seminar (KS\, AR\, IA\, MO\, NE\, OK)\n\n\nOpportunities for using mass timber construction for new building projects have never been greater now that the International Building Code (IBC) allows up to 18 stories with these materials. However\, with expanded code options\, selecting the right construction type is crucial to making a project pencil . This course focuses on mid-rise mass timber construction\, highlighting examples in the five- to eight-story range—including office\, mixed-use\, and multi-family projects. Discussion will help to inform decisions on how to incorporate mass timber based on a project’s intended height\, area\, and occupancies. The presentation will also cover decisions that need to be made early in the design process\, including grid layout\, approach to achieving fire ratings\, and lateral system selection. \n  \nSpeaker: Jason Bahr\, PE | WoodWorks \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 1.0 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 1.0 PDH credit or 0.1 ICC credit \n  \nOnline Attendees: \n\nWoodWorks will send each attendee a certificate of completion within 2 weeks via email.\nPlease note that to receive a certificate\, attendees must stay for the duration of the event.\n\n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nMary Schramka | mary.schramka@woodworks.org | 708.204.9578 \n  \nImage: 1030 Music Row / Anecdote Architectural Experiences / StructureCraft / Photo Andrew Keithly

SUMMARY:Mass Timber Structural Design: Engineering Modern Timber Structures
DESCRIPTION:Regional Online Seminar (OR\, HI\, ID-South)\n\n\nThis presentation will provide a detailed look at the structural design processes associated with a variety of mass timber products\, including glued-laminated timber (glulam)\, cross-laminated timber (CLT)\, and nail-laminated timber (NLT). Applications for the use of these products in gravity force-resisting systems under modern building codes will be discussed. Other technical topics will include mass timber floor panel vibration criteria\, connection options and design considerations\, and an introduction to lateral systems common in mass timber buildings. Mass timber framing components are often left exposed to act as a finish while taking advantage of their aesthetics. As such\, they are often required to provide a fire-resistance rating demonstrating their ability to maintain structural integrity in the event of a fire. This session will also discuss structural design of mass timber elements under fire conditions. \n  \nSpeaker: Kate Carrigg\, PE | WoodWorks \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 2.0 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 2.0 PDH credits or 0.2 ICC credits \n  \nOnline Attendees: \n\nWoodWorks will send each attendee a certificate of completion within 2 weeks via email.\nPlease note that to receive a certificate\, attendees must stay for the duration of the event.\n\n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nJaime Krohn\, CMP | jaime@woodworks.org | (312) 841-8272 \n  \nImage: Platte Fifteen / OZ Architecture / KL&A Engineers and Builders / photo JC Buck
