SUMMARY:Tour of Junction and Goldfinch Lofts in Des Moines\, IA
DESCRIPTION:Regional In-Person Tour (Des Moines\, IA)\n\n\nThis unique educational event will provide an in-depth look at two mass timber projects redefining multi-family housing design in Iowa. The first project is Iowa’s first residential mass timber building\, Junction Lofts\, which is also the state’s first building to be awarded the US Forest Service Wood Innovation Grant for Environmentally Progressive Design. Attendees will also tour Goldfinch Lofts\, another mass timber/light-frame hybrid project in Des Moines. Goldfinch Lofts is the first Passive House-certified multi-family building in Iowa\, and will be the first Zero Carbon Certified (by Living Future) Low Income Housing Tax Credit project in the country. Team members\, including the developer behind both projects\, will join the tour and share strategies for successful\, code-compliant mass timber projects. The tour format encourages questions and discussion\, and attendees can expect to leave with insights into the project’s design\, detailing\, material selection process\, and construction techniques utilized throughout the building. \nFollowing the tour join us for a networking happy hour at nearby St Kilda from 4:00-5:30 pm. \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 2.0 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 2.0 PDH credits or 0.20 ICC credits \n  \nSpeaker: \n \nJason Bahr PE | WoodWorks \nJason Bahr\, PE\, has more than 20 years of experience as a structural engineer and a passion for sustainable building. SUMMARY:Mid-Rise Wood Design: Light-Frame and Mass Timber Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Regional Online Seminar (TX)\n\n\nMid-rise wood construction offers designers multiple pathways to create code-compliant\, efficient buildings using light-frame and mass timber systems. This course compares these approaches and examines how construction type\, occupancy\, building height and area\, and project goals influence system selection. For light-frame buildings\, discussion focuses on maximizing the allowable building size using strategies such as sprinklers\, open frontage\, sloping sites\, podiums\, and mezzanines. For mass timber buildings\, the course highlights the impact of construction type selection and other early design decisions such as grid layout\, fire-resistance ratings\, and lateral systems. Built examples will illustrate how these decisions can support safe\, efficient\, and cost-effective mid-rise design. \n  \nSpeaker: \n \nMark Bartlett\, PE | WoodWorks \nMark joined the WoodWorks team in 2017. Before joining WoodWorks\, he spent 11 years as a consulting engineer\, eight years as a field engineer with Simpson Strong-Tie\, and six years in business development for an engineering firm. His structural engineering project experience includes retail\, hospitality\, education\, aviation\, theaters\, renovations of existing structures\, and post-installed anchorage to concrete. Mark received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structures from Lehigh University and has worked as a structural engineer in many capacities. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the states of Texas and Oklahoma. \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 1.5 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 1.5 PDH credits or 0.15 ICC credits \n  \nOnline Attendees: \n\nWoodWorks will send each attendee a certificate of completion within 2 weeks via email.\nPlease note that to receive a certificate\, attendees must stay for the duration of the event.\n\n  \nLearning Objectives: \n\nIdentify different wood systems that can be used for mid-rise construction and how construction type\, occupancy\, height\, and area influence the selection of a safe and code-compliant wood structural system.\nApply code provisions for construction type\, allowable height and area\, sprinklers\, open frontage\, sloping sites\, podiums\, and mezzanines to maximize the potential of light-frame wood construction while maintaining required life-safety protections.\nEvaluate key mass timber design considerations including structural grid\, fire-resistance ratings\, and lateral-force-resisting systems and their influence on structural performance\, fire safety\, and occupant welfare.\nReview built projects to understand how code provisions and early design decisions can be integrated to achieve safe\, efficient\, and cost-effective mid-rise buildings.\n\n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nMary Schramka | mary.schramka@woodworks.org | 708.204.9578 \n  \nImage: Water Marq\, Kelly Grossman Architects\, Greg Folkins Photography
