SUMMARY:Mass Timber Strategies for High-Performance Affordable Housing
DESCRIPTION:National Online Seminar\nThis course examines how hybrid mass timber systems can support resilient multi-family affordable housing. Attendees will review design and construction approaches used to meet high-performance building goals\, including Zero Carbon Certification (by Living Future) and Passive House certification strategies\, hybrid structural systems\, panel optimization\, acoustic assemblies\, and coordination with local trades and project teams. The course will also examine how mass timber contributes to durability\, biophilic design\, healthy indoor environments\, and reduced embodied carbon in residential construction. \nThrough real-world project examples\, participants will gain practical insight into applying mass timber systems to improve building performance and address the growing demand for sustainable workforce housing. \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 1.0 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 1.0 PDH credit or 0.10 ICC credit \n  \nBonus content – Bonus content – attendees are invited to stay after the webinar for a non-accredited bonus session featuring WoodWorks Partner Sterling Structural for a manufacturer Q&A. Learn more about their products and services and how they can be a resource on your next project.  \n  \n\n\nSpeakers:\n\n\n\nScott & Molly Cutler\, Cutler Development \nCutler Development is a Des Moines-based commercial real estate firm led by Scott and Molly Cutler\, focusing on urban infill and mixed-use projects in walkable areas served by mass transit\, with a commitment to sustainability and affordable housing. They have completed two mass timber projects to date—Junction Lofts and Star Lofts. Both projects include units set aside for residents earning 30-80% of the Area Median Income and Star Lofts is slated to achieve Zero Carbon Certification by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI). They are currently working on two more mass timber projects: A low carbon\, 20-unit affordable\, for-sale townhome project\, and Goldfrinch Lofts\, a mass timber/light-frame hybrid project set to be the first Zero Carbon Certified (by ILFI) Low-Income Housing Tax Credit project in the country. \n\n\n\n  \nLearning Objectives: \n\nExamine how hybrid mass timber and conventional wood framing systems can be integrated to support structural performance\, durability\, fire protection\, and occupant well-being in multi-family housing projects.\nDiscuss the sustainability benefits of mass timber\, including embodied carbon reduction and life cycle impacts\, and why it matters.\nEvaluate how design approaches such as panel optimization\, acoustic assemblies\, and coordinated trade integration contribute to constructability\, building performance\, and occupant comfort.\nApply lessons from real-world workforce housing developments to support resilient\, code-compliant\, and sustainable multi-family building design\n\n  \nOnline Attendees: \n\nWoodWorks will send each attendee a certificate of completion within 2 weeks via email.\nPlease note that to receive a certificate\, attendees must stay for the duration of the event.\n\n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nMary Schramka | mary.schramka@woodworks.org | 708.204.9578 \n  \nImage: Star Lofts / ID8 Architects / KPFF / Brent Isenberger Photography

SUMMARY:Mass Timber Tour: Summit House
DESCRIPTION:Regional In-Person Tour (Denver\, CO)\n\n\nAn in-depth look at Summit House\, the nearly completed student housing project at Metro State University in Denver\, CO. We will tour the mixed-use project’s retail space\, academic amenities\, and student housing units. The 12-story\, 200\,000-square-foot structure utilizes CLT panels and glulam framing for a low-carbon solution to add needed student and workforce housing on the Auraria Campus. Attendees will tour the site with members of the project team\, who will share strategies for successful\, code-compliant mass timber projects. The tour format encourages questions and discussion\, and attendees can expect to leave with insights into the design\, detailing\, and construction techniques used throughout the building\, as well as factors that influenced material selection. \n  \nPPE: PPE required: Hardhat\, glasses\, close-toed shoes (boots preferred) Please bring your own\, a limited number will be available onsite. \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 1.5 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 1.5 PDH credits or 0.15 ICC credits \n  \nSpeaker: \n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmmy Hoa Tran\, PE | WoodWorks \n\n\nEmmy is a licensed professional engineer in Colorado with experience in structural design for multi-family\, commercial\, and mixed-use projects. Driven by her passion for sustainable construction\, Emmy is focused on helping AEC+D professionals explore opportunities in light-frame and mass timber design for the betterment of the environment and society. She is a proud alumna of the Colorado School of Mines\, holding BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nLocation: \nSummit House \n1405 11th St. \nDenver\, Co 80204 \n*We will meet at the North corner of 11th and Walnut St. Denver\, CO 80204 for sign-in and a safety brief \n  \nParking: \nhttps://aurariacampus.edu/services-departments/parking/parking-lot-options/ \nNote: Fridays are charged at weekend rates so public transportation\, carpooling\, etc. can be advantageous\, but there are plenty of parking lots and garages available on the Auraria campus. \n  \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDiscuss typical construction practices for mass timber projects\, including safety best practices\, installation efficiency\, and coordination with follow-on trades.\nHighlight a variety of structural and architectural uses of CLT panels and glulam through an in-person tour of an under-construction project\, highlighting the biophilic benefits of exposed mass timber for occupants and visitors.\nDemonstrate connection detailing techniques used in code-compliant mass timber buildings to ensure appropriate structural capacity\, fire resistance\, and consideration of the project construction type.\nExplain the diverse methods of project development and approaches used by the design team\, including owners\, contractors\, architects\, and engineers\, to achieve a successful mass timber project.\n\n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nJaime Krohn\, CMP | jaime@woodworks.org | (312) 841-8272 \n  \nPhoto credit: KL&A
