SUMMARY:Mass Timber Structural Products and Framing Systems\, St Louis\, MO
DESCRIPTION:Regional In-Person Seminar (St. Louis\, MO)\n\n\nThis course provides architects and engineers with an introduction to mass timber structural systems\, focusing on the characteristics\, manufacturing processes\, and design considerations associated with commonly used mass timber products. Participants will examine the range of available structural components\, including cross-laminated timber (CLT)\, nail-laminated timber (NLT)\, glued laminated timber (glulam)\, and structural composite lumber (SCL)\, and learn how product attributes influence structural performance\, fire resistance\, acoustics\, constructability\, and code compliance. \nThe course also explores the fundamental framing systems used in mass timber buildings\, including bearing wall\, post-and-beam\, post-and-plate\, and hybrid structural layouts. Through discussions on system selection\, structural optimization\, and coordination with mechanical\, electrical\, plumbing\, and fire protection systems\, attendees will gain insights into strategies for developing efficient and code-compliant building designs. Emphasis is placed on understanding how product selection and framing system decisions made early in the design process affect building performance\, occupant safety\, project efficiency\, and long-term project success. \nLunch provided by Fordo’s Killer Pizza. \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 1.0 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 1.0 PDH credit or 0.10 ICC credit \n  \nSpeaker: \n \nJason Bahr PE | WoodWorks \nJason Bahr\, PE\, has more than 20 years of experience as a structural engineer and a passion for sustainable building. SUMMARY:Fire-Resistant Wood Design and Detailing
DESCRIPTION:Regional Online Seminar (KS\, AR\, IA\, MO\, NE\, OK)\n\n\nWith an increase in wood-frame buildings\, more designers are seeking information on code-compliant and constructible detailing. Many are unsure of the code’s requirements for details\, specifically at the intersection of rated assemblies and where structure and fire protection meet. This presentation will focus on interior fire-rated assemblies such as firewalls\, fire barriers and fire partitions. Discussion will include fire-resistance rating continuity\, allowable uses of wood framing in rated assemblies\, and allowable penetrations. \n  \nSpeaker: \n \nJason Bahr\, PE | WoodWorks \nJason Bahr\, PE\, has more than 20 years of experience as a structural engineer and a passion for sustainable building. He has a breadth of expertise in preparing structural calculations and design documents for educational building projects\, along with residential construction and remodeling experience. SUMMARY:Building Bigger with Light-Frame: Heights\, Areas and Critical Details
DESCRIPTION:Regional Online Seminar (CA-North\, NV\, UT)\n\n\nGetting the most out of light-frame wood construction requires thoughtful code decisions at both the building and detail scale. This presentation will explore opportunities to maximize the size and density of light-frame wood buildings\, with a focus on Type III and Type V construction and underutilized code provisions that can allow these construction types to go taller. Topics will include allowable building height and area\, sprinklers\, frontage\, podiums\, and other strategies for maximizing what can be achieved with light-frame wood construction. From there\, the discussion will shift to common design and permitting challenges\, with a focus on interior and exterior wall assemblies. Topics will include firewalls\, fire barriers and fire partitions\, exterior wall requirements\, fire-resistance continuity\, and intersections between rated assemblies and structure. \n  \nSpeaker: \n \nChelsea Drenick\, SE | WoodWorks \nChelsea is a licensed structural engineer in the state of California. She received her BS in Engineering from Harvey Mudd College and MS in Civil Engineering from Stanford University. Chelsea spent nine years in structural design consulting prior to joining WoodWorks. Her experience is in a variety of sectors including residential\, higher education and retrofit of existing and historic structures. She is passionate about sustainability and the use of wood as a building material to reduce the embodied carbon emissions of structures. \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 1.5 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 1.5 PDH credits or 0.15 ICC credits \n  \nOnline Attendees: \n\nWoodWorks will send each attendee a certificate of completion within 2 weeks via email.\nPlease note that to receive a certificate\, attendees must stay for the duration of the event.\n\n  \nLearning Objectives: \n\nEvaluate construction type\, occupancy\, allowable height and area\, and other code considerations that influence the size and configuration of mid-rise light-frame wood buildings that support code compliance.\nIdentify opportunities to maximize building height and area through provisions for sprinklers\, frontage\, podiums\, mezzanines\, sloping sites to determine how allowable building height and area can be achieved while maintaining required fire and life safety protections.\nDistinguish code requirements for common interior and exterior wall conditions\, including firewalls\, fire barriers\, fire partitions\, and fire-resistance-rated exterior walls that support occupant safety.\nApply fire-resistance and continuity requirements at floor\, roof\, and structural intersections to develop compliant details that maintain the integrity of required fire-resistance-rated assemblies in light-frame wood buildings.\n\n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nJaime Krohn\, CMP | jaime@woodworks.org | (312) 841-8272 \n  \nImage: Hearth – Boise\, ID / Holst Architecture / Axiom / photo Gabe Border
