SUMMARY:Moisture Control and Durability in Hybrid Light-Frame Panelized Roof Systems
DESCRIPTION:National Online Seminar\nHybrid light-frame panelized roof systems are widely used throughout the U.S. in large industrial warehouses and distribution centers for their economy\, constructability\, and repeatability—especially when paired with panelized construction. However\, long-term performance depends on a clear understanding of the complete roof assembly and its interaction with climate-specific moisture conditions. \nThis webinar provides a building science–based overview of hybrid light-frame panelized roof assemblies\, clarifying how and where moisture accumulation and condensation can occur\, and why long-term performance depends on enclosure design rather than material choice alone. Participants will examine detailing and control-layer strategies that support effective drying\, prevent mold growth\, and protect indoor environmental quality. Through real-world case studies\, the session offers actionable approaches that support code compliance\, occupant health\, and long-term durability across multiple climate zones. \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 1.5 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 1.5 PDH credit or 0.15 ICC credit \n  \nBonus content: Attendees are invited to stay on after the webinar for a non-accredited bonus session featuring WoodWorks Partner RedBuilt for a manufacturer Q&A. \n\n\nSpeakers:\n\n\n\n  \nColin Shane\, M.Eng.\, P.Eng. SUMMARY:Mass Timber Acoustic Design: Variables and Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Mass Timber Acoustic Design: Variables and Solutions\nMass timber construction is often perceived as acoustically inferior to conventional construction types\, particularly in multi-family buildings subject to code-mandated sound transmission requirements. These perceptions often lead to design approaches that increase assembly mass—most commonly by adding concrete toppings\, which can diminish the embodied carbon benefits of mass timber systems. This course evaluates the validity of these assumptions through a review of measured baseline acoustical performance data for mass timber assemblies and comparisons with conventional construction types. The presentation introduces the principles of sound transmission and isolation to provide a framework for understanding acoustical behavior in building assemblies\, followed by an examination of design and construction strategies for improving airborne and structure-borne sound isolation in mass timber floors and walls. The presentation will also cover acoustic flanking and how it relates to mass timber construction. Participants will gain insight into informed decision-making strategies that balance performance\, constructability\, and sustainability.   \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 1.0 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 1.0 PDH credit or 0.10 ICC credit \n  \nBonus content: Attendees are invited to stay on after the webinar for a non-accredited bonus session featuring WoodWorks Partner Mercer Mass Timber for a manufacturer Q&A. \n\n\nSpeaker:\n\n\n  \n\nMike Raley | Director\, Oregon Acoustic Research Laboratory \nMike Raley is an acoustician with more than 17 years of experience in architectural acoustics\, specializing in laboratory testing of building assemblies. SUMMARY:Realizing Mass Timber’s Benefits: Key Design Decisions and Carbon Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Regional Online Seminar (OR\, ID-South\, HI)\n\n\nMass timber is a unique\, non-commodity building material and\, to lay the groundwork for success\, certain critical decisions must be made as early as possible. These decisions can have a big impact on cost\, and can either increase or limit the opportunities available later in design. This presentation will examine early project decisions and design steps\, focusing on how to optimize projects for mass timber to avoid price premiums. Topics will include construction types\, fire ratings\, column grids and beam/panel spans\, acoustics\, and MEP integration. Completed mass timber projects will be presented to illustrate the variety of viable options when navigating these key decisions. \nAnother important topic in mass timber building design is understanding how building material choice contributes to carbon impact. As more building designers utilize life cycle assessment (LCA) to compare the environmental performance of material and design alternatives\, questions arise about how wood products and buildings should be analyzed. Most designers recognize the carbon-storing capability of wood but are unsure how to include it in their carbon analysis. This course will provide an in-depth look at biogenic carbon accounting\, including when and how it should be counted\, as well as a discussion of end-of-life assumptions. \n  \nSpeaker: \n \nKate Carrigg\, PE | WoodWorks \nKate comes to WoodWorks with a decade of construction industry experience in the Pacific Northwest. Her involvement with wood structures began as an undergraduate student at Colorado State University\, where she participated in the NeesWOOD CAPSTONE shake table test in Japan. She earned a dual Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering and Wood Science from Oregon State University with a focus in structural engineering. As a licensed Professional Engineer in Oregon and California\, she was involved with the design of mass timber projects during the early stages of code development for CLT. Kate has experience in both the fields of engineering and construction management of multifamily podium buildings. Kate’s diverse background allows her to approach projects and problem solving holistically\, with constructability and non-structural building systems in mind. \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 2.0 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 2.0 PDH credits or 0.2 ICC credits \n  \nOnline Attendees: \n\nWoodWorks will send each attendee a certificate of completion within 2 weeks via email.\nPlease note that to receive a certificate\, attendees must stay for the duration of the event.\n\n  \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDiscuss the impacts of construction type on required fire-resistance ratings of structural elements\, noting the impacts that these ratings have on member spans and resulting grids.\nHighlight effective methods of integrating MEP services in a mass timber building and discuss the relative impacts of each on cost\, aesthetics\, occupant comfort\, and future tenant renovations.\nDefine biogenic carbon and understand how to calculate the amount of carbon stored in wood products.\nExplain biogenic carbon removals\, emissions\, and exports at each stage of a wood product’s life cycle\, in alignment with ISO standards.\n\n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nJaime Krohn\, CMP | jaime@woodworks.org | (312) 841-8272 \n  \nImage: Shortstack Mississippi\, Works Architecture\, DCI Engineers\, Joshua James Huff Photography

SUMMARY:Designing and Building with Mass Timber: Design\, Planning and Performance
DESCRIPTION:Regional Online Seminar (PA & NJ)\n\n\nHow can architects\, engineers and contractors collaborate to meet the growing demand for mass timber buildings? While developers across the country are pursuing mass timber projects\, knowledge among AEC professionals is not yet widespread. Firms have varying degrees of familiarity with both the products and practicalities of designing\, sourcing\, and building a modern mass timber structure\, and early adopters continue to play a significant role in educating the rest of the community. This presentation seeks to build on this openness and environment of shared learning\, providing an overview of mass timber products\, planning\, design and implementation to maximize the benefits these buildings can deliver. We’ll also discuss why some mass timber projects face resistance\, and how to overcome misconceptions to achieve success. Topics will also include preconstruction coordination and interactions between the manufacturer and design/construction teams\, case-based approaches to costing and scheduling\, project delivery methods\, how to achieve the highest level of efficiency for costs\, schedule\, and performance\, and additional education and training opportunities. \n  \nSpeaker: \n \nShannon Williams\, PE | WoodWorks \nShannon is a licensed professional engineer in Pennsylvania.
