SUMMARY:Mass Timber Tour: Upper Macungie Township Community Lifestyle Center
DESCRIPTION:*This event has been postponed and will be rescheduled for a future date\nRegional In-Person Tour (Allentown\, PA)\n\n\nThis unique educational event will showcase one of North America’s longest timber spans\, currently being built in Pennsylvania’s fast-growing Upper Macungie Township. Totaling 188\,000 square feet\, the Upper Macungie Township Community Lifestyle Center is a community hub comprising an indoor soccer field\, two flex gyms\, and an amenity building. \nThe focal point is the 130\,000-square-foot soccer field\, where hybrid glulam-steel portal frames spanning 280 feet—one of the longest timber truss clear-spans in North America—were engineered to meet the architect’s vision of an efficient yet visually appealing structure. The basketball court structures were designed with hybrid glulam-steel trusses clear-spanning up to 140 feet\, supported by a glulam frame. \nAttendees will get an up-close look at the design and construction challenges the architect\, engineer\, and contractor overcame to achieve a timber span of this scale. \nPlease join us for lunch before the tour. The tour will begin at 1 pm. This event will be held entirely outdoors\, so we recommend dressing comfortably for the weather! \n  \nPPE: This is an active jobsite. Accessibility will be limited. SUMMARY:Mass Timber in Multi-family Construction: Mid-Rise and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Regional In-Person Seminar (Seattle\, WA)\n\n\nCan mass timber make financial sense for mid-rise multi-family construction? What new opportunities does the 2021 International Building Code create for mass timber housing in the 6 to 18-story range? While mass timber is often associated with one-off projects that celebrate innovation over repeatability\, options for multi-family buildings that provide a strong return on investment have never been greater—if a designer understands how to leverage the benefits of these materials in the context of the new mass timber construction types. This presentation will review decisions that are key to the viability of mass timber multi-family projects\, including construction type selection\, grid layout\, approach to achieving fire-resistance ratings\, lateral system selection\, and acoustics. \n  \nSpeaker: Michael Muller\, PE\, SE | WoodWorks \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 2.0 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 2.0 PDH credits or 0.2 ICC credits \n  \nLocation: \nNational Nordic Museum \n2655 NW Market Street \nSeattle\, WA 98107 \nClassroom 1 \nMap/Directions \nParking: The National Nordic Museum’s parking lot is located on the south side of the building and can be accessed from the corner of NW Market St and 28th Ave NW. Parking starts at $2.00 per hour and must be paid at the parking kiosks located at the base of the stairs or online via Premium Parking(Opens an external site). \nAlternative parking options are available along NW Market Street\, in the residential neighborhoods surrounding the Museum\, and at the Hiram Chittenden Locks parking lot—a five-minute walk to the Museum. \nPublic Transit: Ballard is serviced by Metro buses 17\, 40\, 44\, and the D Line. \n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nJaime Krohn\, CMP | jaime@woodworks.org | (312) 841-8272 \n  \nImage: The Canyons\, Kaiser+Path\, Catena Consulting Engineers\, Photo Jeremy Bittermann

SUMMARY:Mass Timber in Multi-family Construction: Mid-Rise and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Regional Online Seminar (WA\, AK\, ID-North)\n\n\nCan mass timber make financial sense for mid-rise multi-family construction? \n  \nSpeaker: Michael Muller\, PE\, SE | WoodWorks \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 2.0 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 2.0 PDH credits or 0.2 ICC credits \n  \nOnline Attendees: \n\nWoodWorks will send each attendee a certificate of completion within 2 weeks via email.\nPlease note that to receive a certificate\, attendees must stay for the duration of the event.\n\n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nJaime Krohn\, CMP | jaime@woodworks.org | (312) 841-8272 \n  \nImage: The Canyons\, Kaiser+Path\, Catena Consulting Engineers\, Photo Jeremy Bittermann

SUMMARY:A New Path for Mass Timber Construction: Code Provisions & Design Steps
DESCRIPTION:Regional Online Seminar (PA & NJ)\n\n\nWe are at an exciting confluence in timber construction. The need for sustainable\, urban construction has never been higher. Concurrently\, mass timber products such as cross-laminated timber have opened the door to many new opportunities for construction\, one of which is tall wood. In January 2019\, the International Code Council (ICC) approved a set of proposals to allow tall wood buildings of up to 18 stories as part of the 2021 International Building Code (IBC). This presentation will introduce the new tall wood code provisions in depth. Starting with a review of the technical research and testing that supported their adoption\, it will then take a detailed look at the new code provisions and methods of addressing the new requirements. Topics will include fire-resistance ratings and allowances for exposed timber\, penetrations\, sprinklers\, connections\, exterior walls and much more. Designers can expect to take away the knowledge they need to start exploring tall wood designs on their projects. \n  \nHost: Shannon Williams\, PE | WoodWorks \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 2.0 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 2.0 PDH credits or 0.2 ICC credits \n  \nOnline Attendees: \n\nWoodWorks will send each attendee a certificate of completion within 2 weeks via email.\nPlease note that to receive a certificate\, attendees must stay for the duration of the event.\n\n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nLeeAnn Charpentier\, CMP | leeann.charpentier@woodworks.org | (301) 633-0330 \n  \nImage: Edelman Fossil Park & Museum of Rowan University / Courtesy of Edelman Fossil Park & Musesum of Rowan University / Western Archrib / Ennead ARchitects

SUMMARY:A Path Forward for Tall Wood Construction: Code Provisions & Design Steps
DESCRIPTION:Regional Online Seminar (TX )\n\n\nWe are at an exciting confluence in timber construction. \nAustin has adopted the 2024 International Building Code (IBC)\, which includes provisions allowing for more exposed wood in Type IV-B buildings. Specifically\, the 2024 IBC permits 100% exposed timber ceilings in Type IV-B construction\, a significant increase from the 20% allowance in the 2021 IBC. This change\, based on fire testing results\, provides more design flexibility while still requiring careful planning to meet fire resistance standards. Austin’s adoption of the 2024 codes\, including the IBC\, took effect on July 10\, 2025. \n  \nSpeaker: Mark Bartlett\, PE | WoodWorks \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 2.0 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 2.0 PDH credits or 0.2 ICC credits \n  \nOnline Attendees: \n\nWoodWorks will send each attendee a certificate of completion within 2 weeks via email.\nPlease note that to receive a certificate\, attendees must stay for the duration of the event.\n\n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nJaime Krohn\, CMP | jaime@woodworks.org | (312) 841-8272 \n  \nImage credit: City of Cedar Park \n**This is not a City of Cedar Park or Library sponsored event.

SUMMARY:Mass Timber: Early Design Decisions & Tall Wood Code Provisions
DESCRIPTION:Regional Online (KS\, AR\, MO\, OK)\n\n\nEarly Design Decisions: Priming Mass Timber Projects for Success \nMass timber is a unique\, non-commodity building material and\, to lay the groundwork for success\, certain critical decisions must be made as early as possible. These decisions can have a big impact on cost and can either increase or limit opportunities later in design. There are many cases of project teams that want to realize the full benefits of mass timber\, but\, because they base their designs on traditional building practices instead of optimizing them for mass timber\, end up with avoidable price premiums. This presentation will walk through early project decisions and design steps\, focusing on how to optimize projects for mass timber and how one early decision can influence others. Topics will include construction types\, fire ratings\, column grids and beam/panel spans\, acoustics\, and MEP integration. Completed mass timber projects will be used to illustrate the variety of viable options when navigating these key decisions. \nExploring Tall Wood: New Code Provisions for Tall Timber Structures \nAs interest in and use of mass timber in the U.S. has grown\, so too has interest in pushing these timber structures to greater heights. SUMMARY:Tall Mass Timber: Code Developments and Differential Material Movement
DESCRIPTION:Regional Online Seminar (MA\, CT\, ME\, NH\, RI\, VT)\n\n\nExploring Tall Wood: New Code Provisions for Tall Timber Structures \nAs interest in and use of mass timber in the U.S. has grown\, so too has interest in pushing these timber structures to greater heights. Using international examples of successful tall wood buildings as precedent\, some designers have proposed tall wood projects in the states using a project-specific performance-based design approach. Following a brief discussion of history and motivators\, this presentation will introduce the new tall wood code provisions and construction types\, as well as the technical research and testing that supported their adoption. \nDifferential Material Movement in Tall Mass Timber Structures \nAs the height of mass timber buildings continues to grow\, so too does the level of design and detailing knowledge required to achieve optimal building construction and performance. One necessary consideration for tall mass timber buildings is vertical movement—including column shrinkage\, joint settlement and creep. The main concerns are potential impacts on vertical mechanical systems\, exterior enclosures\, and interior partitions\, as well as differential vertical movement of the timber framing systems relative to building elements such as concrete core walls and exterior facades. This presentation will analyze reasons for vertical movement (short and long term)\, provide methods of calculating anticipated movement\, highlight detailing options to minimize and accommodate movement\, and discuss strategies implemented on tall mass timber projects completed in North America. \n  \nSpeaker: Patrick Duffy\, PE | WoodWorks \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 2.0 AIA/CES HSW LUs\, 2.0 PDH credits or 0.2 ICC credits \n  \nOnline Attendees: \n\nWoodWorks will send each attendee a certificate of completion within 2 weeks via email.\nPlease note that to receive a certificate\, attendees must stay for the duration of the event.\n\n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nLeeAnn Charpentier\, CMP | leeann.charpentier@woodworks.org | (301) 633-0330 \n  \nImage: 111 East Grand / Neumann Monson Architects / Raker Rhodes Engineering / StructureCraft / Photo Mike Sinclair
