SUMMARY:Mass Timber Moisture Control: Lessons from the Jobsite
DESCRIPTION:Mass Timber Moisture Control: Lessons from the Jobsite\nMass timber projects require thoughtful moisture management throughout construction to support structural performance\, dimensional stability\, finish quality\, and long-term building durability. This webinar examines practical strategies for managing moisture exposure before\, during\, and after installation of mass timber components. Drawing from real-world project experience\, contractors Chad Hamilton of XL Construction and Matthew Tonello of Consigli will share lessons learned from completed mass timber buildings\, including approaches to planning\, sequencing\, temporary protection\, monitoring\, and response protocols. \nThe presenters will discuss how early coordination among project teams\, informed construction planning\, and proactive site management can help maintain construction quality\, reduce project risk\, and support efficient project delivery. Attendees will gain insights into field-tested methods for protecting mass timber elements while balancing schedule\, cost\, safety\, and constructability considerations. \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 1.0 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 1.0 PDH credit or 0.10 ICC credit \n\n\nSpeakers:\n\n\n  \n\nChad Hamilton | XL Construction \nAs Project Executive at XL Construction\, Chad has been integral to more than 1 million square feet of mass timber design and construction deliverables in the last five years. His client-focused approach to project delivery has resulted in decades of work dedicated to workplace innovators\, such as Apple and Google. In fact\, Chad has been a valued contributor to Google’s R&D lab\, a division that sets out to advance the future workplace\, since its inception. With his knowledge base\, he has helped clients bring functional\, affordable\, and constructable mass timber designs to reality. Chad received his Bachelor of Science in Construction Management from the University of Nebraska. He is a LEED accredited professional.  \n\n\n\n \nMatthew Tonello\, P.E. | Consigli  \nAs a mass timber industry expert\, Matthew leads a team of Consigli professionals on the forefront of advanced mass timber manufacturing\, fabricating and building methods. Early in his career\, he spent 10 years as a structural engineer focused on timber structures. In 2016\, Matthew co-founded the Maine Mass Timber Advisory Council\, which advises the University of Maine’s Mass Timber Commercialization Center. Additionally\, he leads the Engineered Wood Products Committee for the Memorandum of Understanding Concerning Cooperation in Forestry between Finland and the State of Maine. Matthew is a registered professional engineer in Maine and Massachusetts and a LEED® Accredited Professional.  \n  \nLearning Objectives: \n\nIdentify common sources of moisture exposure during mass timber construction and explain their potential impacts on structural performance\, dimensional stability\, finish quality\, and long-term durability.\nDescribe preconstruction planning and coordination strategies that support effective moisture management during mass timber installation and enclosure.\nEvaluate temporary protection methods\, sequencing approaches\, and site management practices used to minimize moisture exposure and maintain the performance of mass timber systems during construction.\nDiscuss field-tested monitoring techniques and response protocols that help project teams manage moisture exposure while supporting construction quality\, project efficiency\, and resilient building outcomes.\n\n  \nOnline Attendees: \n\nWoodWorks will send each attendee a certificate of completion within 2 weeks via email.\nPlease note that to receive a certificate\, attendees must stay for the duration of the event.\n\n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nMary Schramka | mary.schramka@woodworks.org | 708.204.9578 \n  \nImage: John W Olver Design Building at UMass Amherst / Leers Weinzapfel Associates / Photo Alex Schreyer
