SUMMARY:The Timber High Rise Advantage: Design & Cost Considerations for Tall Wood
DESCRIPTION:Regional Online Seminar (DC\, DE\, MD\, VA\, WV)\n\n\nThe introduction of three new construction types in the 2021 International Building Code has created exciting possibilities for tall mass timber buildings. However\, to effectively and efficiently implement the new code provisions for construction types IV-A\, IV-B\, and IV-C\, it is necessary to thoroughly understand the allowances and required design methodologies. This presentation will take a detailed look at a number of critical design and construction topics for tall timber buildings\, including high-rise and sprinkler requirements\, options for lateral force-resisting systems\, fire design for penetrations\, connections and abutting panels\, shaft wall considerations\, acoustics performance\, and construction fire safety practices. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nReview code requirements unique to tall wood buildings\, focusing on items such as sprinklers and shaft construction.\nHighlight design options for addressing topics such as fire stops at penetrations through mass timber assemblies and fire resistance of exterior walls in tall timber structures.\nDiscuss the acoustical performance of mass timber assemblies and highlight successful acoustical design approaches.\nDemonstrate examples of lateral force-resisting systems in tall mass timber buildings and discuss differences in code compliance and material tolerances.\n\n  \nSpeaker: John O’Donald II\, PE | WoodWorks \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 1.0 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 1.0 PDH credit or 0.10 ICC credit \n  \nOnline Attendees: \n\nWoodWorks will send each attendee a certificate of completion within 2 weeks via email.\nPlease note that to receive a certificate\, attendees must stay for the duration of the event.\n\n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nLeeAnn Charpentier\, CMP | leeann.charpentier@woodworks.org | (301) 633-0330 \n  \nImage: 80 M Street / Hickok Cole / Arup / Photo Ron Blunt

SUMMARY:Timberwood Creek: Hybrid Mass Timber Housing Tour
DESCRIPTION:Regional In-Person Tour (Layton\, UT)\n\n\nThis educational tour will provide an in-depth look at Timberwood Creek\, a permanent supportive housing project in Layton\, Utah\, funded and developed by Davis Behavioral Health. The project features a hybrid structural system combining mass timber—including cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor panels and glue-laminated timber (glulam) beams—with light-frame wood walls and steel framing. This innovative approach leverages the strengths of multiple structural systems to support efficient construction while highlighting wood as a sustainable building material that contributes to reduced environmental impact and a warm\, natural aesthetic. Attendees will tour the project and learn about the integration of hybrid structural systems\, detailing\, construction sequencing\, and sustainability considerations\, including the benefits of wood as a renewable resource. The tour format encourages questions and discussion\, and participants will gain insights into the design strategies\, material choices\, and construction considerations that shaped the project. \nPlease join us for networking and refreshments following the tour. \n  \nPPE: Please bring your own PPE: hard hat\, vest\, safety glasses\, closed-toe shoes. Limited quantities will be available onsite. \n  \nCredits: Attendees can earn 1.5 AIA HSW\, .015 ICC \n  \nSpeaker: Chelsea Drenick\, SE | WoodWorks \n  \nLocation: \nDavis Behavioral Health – Timberwood Creek Housing \n850 South Main Street \nLayton\, UT 84041 \nMap \n  \nParking: \n934 South Main Street \nLayton\, UT 84041 \n  \nFor questions or additional information\, please contact: \nJaime Krohn\, CMP | jaime@woodworks.org | (312) 841-8272 \n  \nImage: Assist Community Design Center
