Regional In-Person Seminar + Tour (East Lansing, MI)

This unique two-part event is comprised of an educational seminar followed by a firsthand look Michigan State University’s STEM Teaching and Learning Facility.

The presentation will walk through early project decisions and design steps, focusing on how to optimize projects for mass timber and how one early decision can influence others. Topics will include construction types, fire ratings, column grids and beam/panel spans, acoustics and MEP integration. Completed mass timber projects will be used to illustrate the variety of viable options when navigating these key decisions.

Following the presentation, take an in-depth look at Michigan State University’s STEM Teaching and Learning Facility, a 121,000-SF mass timber structure and the first significant use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) in the state. The facility consists of two mass timber wings flanking the north and south ends of the long-decommissioned Shaw Lane Power Plant, which was also revitalized and repurposed. The wings feature three stories of glulam post-and-beam construction with steel diagonal bracing, CLT floor and roof decks, and CLT walls in the egress stairs. CLT was also used for structural floor decks in the power plant. The exposed timber structure was chosen to help realize the University’s goal of utilizing innovative and sustainable construction methods that also function as visual learning tools. The tour format encourages questions and discussion, and attendees can expect to leave, not only with insights on the project’s design and execution, but factors that influenced material and detail selection.

Join us after the tour for a networking happy hour at the Graduate Rock Bar located at 133 Evergreen Ave, East Lansing (roof top bar at the Graduate Hotel).

This seminar is supported in part by MassTimber@MSU, a program at Michigan State University that leverages research, education, outreach, communications, policy, and partnerships to advance sustainable mass timber construction and manufacture in Michigan and the surrounding region.
