Fire-resistive Design of Exposed Timber Structures
Paul Gilham, PE, SE, Western Wood Structures, Inc.

This presentation will focus on the two distinct construction types that allow designers to incorporate the beauty of exposed timber with a fire-resistive framing system—heavy timber and one-hour fire-resistive construction. Both are approved by the International Building Code and yet there is a great deal of confusion regarding these systems within the design community. Topics will include an overview of heavy timber construction and two code-recognized methods of achieving one-hour fire-resistive rated construction in specific building types, as well as permitted areas. Examples of how to detail the framing system for different building types will also be provided.

Paul Gilham is Vice President and Chief Engineer for Western Wood Structures, Inc., where he has worked for 30 years. His responsibilities include designing engineered timber structural systems, including domes, vehicle and pedestrian bridges, storage facilities, arches, and trusses. He also provides inspection services and designs repairs for existing timber structures. He earned his BS in Civil Engineering from Oregon State University, and his MS in Civil Engineering from Portland State University.


Building Science and Moisture Control in
Wood-frame Building Enclosures in the Pacific Northwest
Michael Aoki-Kramer, BA, JD, LEED AP, RDH Building Sciences, Inc.

With the introduction of new materials that are increasingly moisture sensitive, more complex building facades and detailing, and greater emphasis on sustainability, energy conservation, and air tightness, a basic understanding of the science of building envelope performance is more relevant today than ever before. Michael will discuss the physics at play in today’s building envelopes and how the physics are applied in the design of exterior wall systems.

Michael Aoki-Kramer is a principal at RDH Building Sciences Inc. As a presenter, he brings a unique perspective to audiences. He combines his work as a building envelope consultant (with degrees in law and molecular biology) with his building scientist’s fascination for the dynamics of the topic rather than just the facts. Looking through the dual lens of lawyer and scientist, he’s called on to identify potential design issues affecting building envelope performance and help clients avoid moisture related problems and litigation.


Enhancing High Performance Design with Wood –
Tools, Trends and Innovation

As buildings move toward higher performance and net zero energy/carbon/environmental impact, new tools are being designed to provide a more comprehensive and objective way to evaluate their structures and performance. Environmental product declarations (EPDs) incorporate life cycle assessment (LCA) tools and data and can help designers to objectively evaluate their material and assembly choices. As well, innovation in wood products are giving designers new options both to reduce embodied and enhance performance during the operational phase of their buildings. This session will provide an overview of EPDs, their development using LCA and their burgeoning importance in rating tools, codes and standards. As well, several new wood products will be available for examination and discussed relevant to their place in assemblies and contribution to building performance. The discussion will also include an update on forest certification and the status of North American forest

s in a global context.

Peter Moonen is a third generation British Columbian who, like many in the province, has his roots in the forest sector. He is co-leader of the Sustainable Building Coalition formed with the Canadian Wood Council, Forest Products Association of Canada and various industry, government and non-government organizations. He is also coordinator of sustainability and special projects for the Canadian Wood WORKS! program.


Designing with Cross Laminated Timber
Darryl Byle, PE, CLT Solutions

This presentation will examine the design and construction process for using cross laminated timber (CLT) in the US, including architectural considerations such fire, acoustic and building envelope detailing for both exposed and covered CLT applications, as well as structural considerations and costs. As the project manager and structural engineer of the first commercial building in the US constructed with CLT, Darryl will provide a first-hand account of the benefits of CLT, including speed of installation (the building took just five days to erect), the environmental and aesthetic benefits of wood, and energy efficiency.

Darryl Byle is a registered Professional Engineer and ICC Certified Plans Examiner and Building Inspector with over 30 years of engineering and project management experience in a wide range of projects. His experience with the design, construction, and inspection aspects of projects provides a broad base for design, plan review, project management and inspection. His engineering firm, CLT Solutions is a consultant for multiple jurisdictions and design firms where he contributes his engineering expertise to all stages and aspects of the building process, including conceptual design and layout, structural design, code compliance, and investigation. During the last three years, Darryl has turned his professional focus to Cross-Laminated Timber production, design, and construction. This gave rise to the opportunity to serve as the design engineer and project manager for the first CLT commercial building completed in the United States: The Long Hall project in Whitefish, MT completed Fall, 2011.
