Fire-resistive Design of Exposed Timber Structures
Paul Gilham, PE, SE, Western Wood Structures, Inc.

This presentation will focus on the two distinct construction types that allow designers to incorporate the beauty of exposed timber with a fire-resistive framing system—heavy timber and one-hour fire-resistive construction. Both are approved by the International Building Code and yet there is a great deal of confusion regarding these systems within the design community. Topics will include an overview of heavy timber construction and two code-recognized methods of achieving one-hour fire-resistive rated construction in specific building types, as well as permitted areas. Examples of how to detail the framing system for different building types will also be provided.

Paul Gilham is Vice President and Chief Engineer for Western Wood Structures, Inc., where he has worked for 30 years. His responsibilities include designing engineered timber structural systems, including domes, vehicle and pedestrian bridges, storage facilities, arches, and trusses. He also provides inspection services and designs repairs for existing timber structures. He earned his BS in Civil Engineering from Oregon State University, and his MS in Civil Engineering from Portland State University.

Advantages of Wall Panelizing in Mid-rise Wood Construction

Wall panelizing can reduce the cost of mid-rise building projects—including, contrary to popular belief, those with complex architectural designs. This presentation will provide an overview of the benefits that can be achieved with the use of panelized walls in multi-story wood buildings, including reduced labor costs, faster erection times and overall value engineering. Project team coordination, phasing of the panelized wall construction, sustainability and the advantages of BIM modeling will also be discussed, and examples of successful projects will be highlighted.

Brian Larrabure is the President and founder of Larrabure framing in Chatsworth, CA. Larrabure’s company is a NAHB and Simpson Strong Tie certified company and BIA member. Established in 1997, Larrabure Framing is comprised of separate multi-family and housing divisions, performing work for national home builders , REIT’s & high end owner-builders. Larrabure has worked with tower cranes since 1984, when they were first brought into the state. His multi-family division has completed over 10,000 units of 5 and 6 story Type III construction, establishing our company as one of the most experienced Type III framer in the state. Larrabure Framing has also completed a multitude (over 20,000 units) of 2 to 4 story type V projects, from 2 and 3 story walk ups with wide open spaces, to tight inner city infill projects that require intense coordination with the builder and suppliers to keep project on schedule. Utilization of tower cranes, when they are required, are one of our strengths. Larrabure Framing has been using Building Information Modeling (BIM) in their workflow since 2006 when they began panelizing their projects. Over 60 percent of their projects are mid-rise wood structures and, since 2009 they are 100% panelized using BIM.

Building Height and Area Compliance with the California Building Code

This session is intended for design professionals who want to better understand how to successfully design multi-story wood buildings in compliance with the 2007/2010 California Building Code (CBC). Focusing on allowable building height and a

rea, it will cover Chapter 5 of the CBC with examples comparing buildings that are different in terms of their occupancy groups, construction types (Type III, IV and V) and design elements (e.g., yard vs. no yard). Participants will be introduced to the no-cost “Check Height and Area” software that analyzes building height and area compliance against the CBC for buildings up to six stories and with as many as four occupancy groups at each level. Step-by-step  instructions will be provided and common issues related to height and area limitations will be illustrated. Attendees who bring laptop computers will also have an opportunity to “test drive” the software with examples of mixed-use/multi-story building analysis.
Ara Sargsyan is an ICC Certified Building Official, Professional Civil Engineer, LEED Accredited Professional and California Licensed General Contractor. He is the Training Officer and a Supervising Plan Check Engineer at the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety. His professional experience also includes Building Code analysis, structural design, teaching civil engineering courses, research and investigation of acoustical properties of building materials. A number of his research works in noise control and building construction have been published and some have been utilized as textbooks. Mr. Sargsyan is a graduate of the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute.

Building Enclosure Design and Moisture Performance
Sam Glass, PhD, USDA Forest Products Laboratory

Moisture management and durability are key elements of building enclosure design but are often not well understood. This presentation will help design and building professionals understand how building enclosures respond to environmental conditions, with an emphasis on heat, air, and moisture movement. The discussion will highlight wood-moisture relations, focusing on key properties and concepts. Strategies will be presented for designing building enclosures with robust performance, with examples from wood-frame and cross laminated timber (CLT) construction.

Sam Glass is a scientist at the USDA Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) in Madison, Wisconsin, where he leads a team in Building Moisture and Durability Research. His team conducts laboratory, field, and modeling studies on building envelope performance, durability of energy-efficient construction, moisture transfer in wood and wood-based materials, and corrosion of metal fasteners in wood. Dr. Glass’s work often involves collaboration on research and technology transfer with academic and industry partners.

Dr. Glass is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). He participates in technical committees and standards related to building envelope performance and moisture control. He currently serves as Research Subcommittee Chair for Technical Committee 4.4, Building Materials and Building Envelope Performance. Prior to joining FPL in 2005, Dr. Glass completed a Ph.D. in physical chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Designing with Cross Laminated Timber
Darryl Byle, PE, CLT Solutions

This presentation will examine the design and construction process for using cross laminated timber (CLT) in the US, including architectural considerations such fire, acoustic and building envelope detailing for both exposed and covered CLT applications, as well as structural considerations and costs. As the project manager and structural engineer of the first commercial building in the US constructed with CLT, Darryl will provide a first-hand account of the benefits of CLT, including speed of installation (the building took just five days to erect), the environmental and aesthetic benefits of wood, and energy effici


Darryl Byle is a registered Professional Engineer and ICC Certified Plans Examiner and Building Inspector with over 30 years of engineering and project management experience in a wide range of projects. His experience with the design, construction, and inspection aspects of projects provides a broad base for design, plan review, project management and inspection. His engineering firm, CLT Solutions is a consultant for multiple jurisdictions and design firms where he contributes his engineering expertise to all stages and aspects of the building process, including conceptual design and layout, structural design, code compliance, and investigation. During the last three years, Darryl has turned his professional focus to Cross-Laminated Timber production, design, and construction. This gave rise to the opportunity to serve as the design engineer and project manager for the first CLT commercial building completed in the United States: The Long Hall project in Whitefish, MT completed Fall, 2011.
