Designing a mass timber building that is efficient—both in its use of timber fiber and application of code provisions—requires a high level of preconstruction coordination across all facets of design. Delivered by experienced structural and mechanical engineers, this presentation will address some of the critical decisions that should be made as early as possible in mass timber projects. These decisions can have a big impact on cost and either increase or limit opportunities later in design (the ripple down effect). Topics will include the unique role of the supply chain in the efficiency of a mass timber project, construction types, fire ratings, column grids and beam/panel spans, and MEP integration.
Janelle Leafblad, PE, WoodWorks
Janelle has been an active building technology consultant since 2002, primarily in the area of wood technology, investigation and design of building envelope components, and construction for both historic and contemporary structures. She earned her BS in Architectural Engineering from the Milwaukee School of Engineering and her MS in Wood Science and Technology from the University of California at Berkeley. Janelle is a licensed professional engineer in California.
Katie M. Ritenour, PE, SE, LEED A.P., KPFF
Katie is a structural engineer and associate at KPFF in Portland, OR. She greatly values team collaboration and is highly responsive to client requests. As an enthusiastic collaborator, Katie is highly responsive to client requests and invested in meeting project goals, aesthetic vision, and technical needs. Katie has worked with a wide range of materials in new construction and renovated buildings. By evaluating all project demands, including constructability and logistic challenges, she helps identify appropriate structural designs for each project. Her project experience includes seismic retrofits, office buildings, university, and cultural institutions, and 24/7 facilities. Katie has worked on several mass timber projects and enjoys the holistic approach required when designing with this material.
Katie Zabrocki, PAE Engineers
Katie is a mechanical engineer with over a decade of experience developing innovative energy-efficient solutions. Her project expertise includes optimizing systems for high-performance buildings and she has played key roles on numerous LEED-certified projects. Katie also has significant experience in K-12 design and project management. She is a valued communicator and collaborator alongside design teams with the goal to achieve important triple-bottom line project outcomes.
