WEBINAR – Five-story Wood-frame Structure over Concrete Podium Slab

This presentation will provide an overview of the design and construction of a five-story wood-framed structure over a concrete podium slab. Topics will include Type III construction, fire-retardant-treated wood, design of the horizontal and vertical lateral systems, two-stage lateral design for seismic, continuous tie-down systems, shear wall deflections and shrinkage considerations. Discussion will highlight topics included in the new WoodWorks Design Example, Five-story Wood-Frame Structure over Podium Slab.
Douglas Thompson, SE, SECB is the President of STB Structural Engineers Inc. and the 2013-2014 President of the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California. Doug received his Bachelor’s degree from Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo and is a partner at STB Structural Engineers, Inc. in Lake Forest. He is a registered PE, SE in 6 states. He has authored several articles and publications, including the light-frame design examples in the Seismic Design Manual, the Guide to the Design of Diaphragms, Chords and Collectors and Four-story/Five-story Wood-frame Structure over Podium Slab. He is currently a board member of SEAOC and is a past chair of the SEAOSC Code Committee and has participated on numerous SEAOSC committees and has been involved with code changes to the UBC and IBC for over 25 years.
