Understanding Moisture Performance of Wood as a Material, Product and System
Ron Anthony, Wood Scientist, Anthony & Associates

This seminar covers the effects of moisture on wood used in construction. It begins with a discussion of how wood responds to moisture in various forms, including relative humidity and liquid water, providing the science behind wood shrinkage, swelling, and performance related to decay and insects. Then the discussion shifts to how different products respond to environmental conditions before and after installation, common moisture issues observed in the field, and design considerations and specifications that can improve the long-term performance of wood products in a building.

Ron Anthony received an MS in Wood Science and Technology and a BS in Forest Management and Wood Science and Technology from Colorado State University. Prior to forming Anthony & Associates in 1999, he conducted research and consulted on wood properties and the use of wood in construction applications. His efforts have led to applications of resistance drilling and digital radioscopy for quantifying decay in structural timbers and investigating hidden conditions. Author of over 100 publications, he has consulted throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and the South Pacific. He is a member of the Association for Preservation Technology International, Colorado Preservation, Inc., Society of Wood Science and Technology, RILEM, and the Forest Products Society, and chairs the Committee on Forensic Investigation for the American Society of Civil Engineers.
