Southern Yellow Pine Tour: A Firsthand Look at Forestry, Manufacturing, Specification, and Engineering Design

This unique educational event will provide an in-depth look at Southern Yellow Pine timber used in construction, with an emphasis on timber management, lumber manufacturing, specification that meets International Building Code requirements, and application under high wind and uplift forces. It will include an on-site tour of a managed forest, where participants will witness firsthand the various stages of growth and land management. It will also include presentations focused on the role of Southern Yellow Pine lumber in sustainable, cost-effective construction, and a tour of a lumber sawmill.

Witness the production of dimensional lumber. Discussion will include the manufacturing process, product optimization, and initiatives to minimize waste.

Learn how to specify Southern Yellow Pine lumber in a way that meets International Building Code requirements for structural applications using actual design examples.

Lateral Design of Wood Frame Structures
Presented by Todd Grevious, PE, USP
Examine loads on a structure and verify a continuous path to the foundation, taking into account that all connections must also be designed to resist and transfer the applied loads to the foundation.

SUSTAINABLY MANAGED FOREST TOUR
Examine various stages of forest growth and plantation management including an active clearcut where we will discuss log merchandizing and environmental stewardship, recent thinning which sets the stage for final harvest, as well as a young pre-merchantable stand.

WoodWorks is an approved AIA provider. Eligible attendees can earn 5 AIA/CES CEH credits (HSW). Engineers and non-member architects will receive a certificate of completion for 5 PDH credits.

Extra Credit – Participants will have an opportunity to earn up to 4 additional credits through self-study. Materials will be distributed to attendees who choose to study and can complete credits online.
