Schematic Health Care Building Charrette: Re-Thinking Assumptions and Challenging Traditions

Session will be led by Terry Pattillo, AIA, WoodWorks

When starting a new building planning and design process, engineers and architects often make assumptions and immediate decisions about what materials and layouts will be used. However, these immediate decisions are often based on previous project experience, comfort level with certain materials, and current understanding of code provisions.

This session will provide an interactive method of discussing and challenging traditional construction materials and techniques used for health care buildings while focusing on what designers may be taking for granted or assuming to be true. The audience will interactively discuss schematic decision making processes associated with health care buildings but the principles also apply to a variety of building and occupancy types. Design assumptions and deciding factors for items such as construction types and materials, fire and acoustical performance, and cost will be reviewed.

PREPARATION:

Review the project specifications for the exercise – the materials will be emailed to you after you register. Because design time will be limited, consider the specifications outlined in the handout and bring ideas to share during this collaborative seminar.
