Design and Proper Use of Engineered Wood Beams

This presentation will provide a detailed look at engineered wood beams including glued laminated timber (glulam), laminated veneer lumber (LVL), laminated strand lumber (LSL), and parallel strand lumber (PSL). Information covered will include definitions, comparisons, applications and sizing, and job site photos will be used to highlight a variety of real-world project examples.
Archie Landreman is a Technical Director for WoodWorks and manages the National Accounts Program. Active in the wood and structural building component industry since 1970, he has held various sales and sales management positions related to wood truss and engineered wood products. In particular, he has extensive experience with lumber, structural wood panels, prefabricated wall panels, wood trusses, engineered wood beams and I-joists. He is a member of numerous organizations, including the American Institute of Architects, Association of Licensed Architects, Construction Specifications Institute, Structural Engineers Association of Wisconsin, Structural Building Components Association, Structural Insulated Panel Association, and Forest Products Society.
Understanding Your Environment: Forests, Trees and Responsible Wood Products

This presentation will address key questions about forests, forestry and wood products. What makes a forest ecosystem? What is responsible forest management? What kind of forests do we have in the Midwest and Lake States? This presentation will help connect what happens in our forests to the use of responsible wood products and green building programs.
Executive Director of Dovetail Partners, Inc., Kathryn Fernholz is a forester by training and has worked on development and forest management issues in a wide range of roles. With a consulting firm, her work included natural resource inventories, comprehensive planning, environmental impact assessments and the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). While working for the Community Forestry Resource Center, she developed and managed a group certification project for family forests. She is also an experienced Forest Management Certification Lead Auditor. Kathryn has a BS in Forest Resources from the University of Minnesota, College of Natural Resources.
Understanding the Design Requirements for Five-story Wood-framed Mid-rise Construction

This course will try to unravel the mystery of how to design 5-story wood frame residential buildings and 6-story mixed-use projects. It will discuss the Building Code requirements, along with its height and area limitations. The course will also discuss some of the technical challenges of building tall wood frame buildings, including designing for wind and seismic forces; how to control shrinkage; and the enhanced fire protection requirements.
Ethan Martin is a Senior Technical Director for WoodWorks and a licensed engineer in several states with experience ranging from civil engineering and land development to residential, commercial, and educational building design. He earned a BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Cornell University specializing in structures. As the previous owner of a structural engineering firm in Asheville, NC, Ethan has worked on projects that range from small renovations and additions to a 470,00
0-square-foot, $125 million central school for the Cherokee Nation. He has also worked on national accounts such as Home Depot, Chili’s, McDonald’s and Honda.
Design Flexibility of Commercial and Institutional Structures
Michael Marshall, BSc, MA OrgL, StructureCraft Builders
This presentation will focus on the tremendous flexibility wood offers to the new architecture given its free-form design possibilities. Examples will include design-build construction of complex and highly visual structures featuring the prominent use of wood, such as the recently completed VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre, a “closed cell” panelized free-form timber structure in Vancouver, BC, the Pearl Visitors’ Centre in Qingdao, China, featuring a doubly-curved massive timber roof, and several other innovative projects featuring wood as expressed structure. Discussion will highlight the design-build prefabrication process and its advantages when creating innovative architectural structures.
Michael Marshall, BSc, MA OrgL, is general manager of StructureCraft Builders, where he oversees the complete design-build process—including business development, engineering, 3D parametric modeling, prefabrication, and erection. He has project managed several complex timber structures, including the Olympic Speed Skating Oval, Arena Stage and others, and has managed the prefabrication and testing facility. Prior to joining StructureCraft six years ago, Michael spent 10 years in various roles related to glulam manufacturing.
