Interactive Schematic Building Planning: Cause & Effect of Preliminary Design Decisions

Session will be led by Terry Pattillo, AIA, WoodWorks

When starting the design process for a new building, architects and engineers base many decisions, including material selection and space layout, on assumptions, previous project experience, comfort level with materials and construction methodologies, and understanding of code provisions.

In this interactive session, participants will be teamed in small groups and given one hour to develop concepts and schematic sketches. They will then share their work, including the rationale behind their choices, with the broader group specific to programmatic layout, structural grid options, and material selection. The focus of this course will be to interactively review these schematic building planning decisions and the impact they make on budget and construction timeline in order to develop more efficient practices. Using a new school for the example, attendees will examine the cause and effect of these early decisions and challenge current design processes applicable to many commercial building types.
