Connection Solutions in Modern Timber Structures

The North American timber construction industry has transformed significantly over the past decade. At the turn of the 20th century, steel and concrete widely replaced wood in the construction of commercial buildings. A century later, technical advances in fabrication techniques and connection engineering, coupled with a renewed interest in timber as an architectural medium and trends toward sustainable construction, have combined to provide an environment in which timber has re-emerged in projects such as schools, university buildings, museums, sports facilities and airports. This presentation provides a brief overview of innovative connection systems and other catalytic changes which helped cause this shift, and highlights innovative project examples in the US, Canada and elsewhere.

Building Solid! Utilizing New Wood Technologies

Solid wood panel construction, which includes cross laminated timber (CLT) panel systems, has gained a foothold in Europe over the past 15 years. Referred to as “the building material of the 21st Century,” solid wood construction has also attracted considerable attention in Canada and the US over the past five years. This presentation will provide an overview of solid wood construction, including CLT, and provide updates on the joint Canada-US code committee proceedings. Examples of recent projects in Europe as well as the first few projects built in North America will be presented.

While The Case for Tall Wood Buildings is positioned as a feasibility study, it’s hoped to represent a new way of thinking that will inspire significant shifts in the way buildings and construction are approached. In this presentation, report co-author Eric Karsh will highlight the performance misconceptions and benefits of wood products and demonstrate why wood is a viable material for tall and large buildings. “In North America we harvest a small portion of our renewable forest potential each year,” he says. “As architects and engineers, we have the ability to shape the future of our built environment through innovation, and it is now our joint responsibility to ensure that change is directed towards solutions with lighter climate impact.”

Continuity for Wind and Seismic in Typical Wood-frame Structures

The overall strength of a building is a function of all of the components—roof, walls, floors, and foundation— working as a unit. This session provides a top to bottom overview of lateral design for wood-frame structures. Topics will include lessons learned from natural disasters, structural load-path continuity, and recent evolution in shear wall and uplift-resistant design. Participants will learn about connections for wood structural panels, beams and columns considering the anisotropic properties of wood, wood-moisture interactions, and new design approaches for load-path continuity.

Originally from Québec, Eric Karsh began his consulting career in Ottawa in 1987 with Adjeleian Allen Rubeli Limited, designers of t

he Toronto SkyDome. He has extensive experience in all common building materials, but since his arrival in British Columbia in 1993, has developed a unique expertise in timber engineering and construction. In 1998, Eric helped found Equilibrium Consulting Inc., which is recognized internationally for work on projects such as the Raleigh-Durham Airport expansion and the Art Gallery of Ontario Dundas Façade by Architect Frank Gehry.

Bryan Readling, PE, is a structural engineer, author and lecturer representing APA’s Field Services Division in Charlotte, NC. Before joining APA in 1990, Bryan worked as a consulting structural engineer after completing a Master’s degree at Clemson University where he measured wind tunnel forces on low-rise structures. His article, “In the Path of the Storm, A firsthand look at the damage inflicted on new wood-frame homes by the April 2011 tornados in North Carolina and Alabama” appears in the September 2011 Journal of Light Construction. An authority on storm-resistant design and engineered wood systems, he is a member of the American Association for Wind Engineering and FEMA’s Mitigation Assessment Team.
