WEBINAR – All-Wood and Hybrid Panelized Roof Systems: Cost-Effective Roof Solutions

September 17, 2014 – 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Join at 10 am Pacific, 11 am Mountain, 12 pm Central, 1 pm Eastern

Although panelized roof systems are especially popular in industrial building applications on the west coast, they can be used to reduce building costs in retail, commercial and office applications all over the US. Learn why panelized roof systems are so cost-effective and how they are efficiently designed and installed. Topics will include solutions for structural loading, fire protection, durability, energy efficiency and constructability in addition to project examples.

Speaker Bio

Peter H. Post, known to all the constructions folks as “Hoppy” started in the Commercial/Industrial Wood Roof Structure industry in July of 1963. He began as an apprentice carpenter working on projects throughout the Western United States. His tutors were the founding fathers of the roof structure industry. In his early years he was involved in the erection of many large wood industrial roof systems that used the old “strap and pin”, “easy bow” and “Lam Bow” barrel type roof truss systems. Within the beginning 4 years of his involvement with the wood roof industry he became site foreman, running some of the largest commercial roof project in California, Oregon, Nevada and Washington State. In 1975 Hoppy became part of the management staff of United Structures located in Oakland, California. In time his assignments evolved from making material list for job order, to shop detailing the custom fit Glulam to be manufactured for a project and also developing total job estimates and sales. Hoppy took over complete management of the field erection operation in 1977. In 1985 Weyerhaeuser bought United Structures and Hoppy became the operation manager for their West Coast wood roof construction company. He was very much involved in getting industry acceptance for the new manufactured wood products that were making their way into the industrial wood roof market. In the May of 1989 Hoppy departed from Weyerhaeuser to start Panelized Structures. In the years since Panelized Structures has developed into the largest Industrial Wood Roof construction company in the Western United States. Prior to the current recession the yearly area volume of industrial wood roof erected by Panelized Structures has been upwards of 35 million square feet. In 1991 raising wood prices, a result of the “spotted owl” US federal forest closure, inspired Hoppy to approach Vulcraft, an industrial steel joist company, with the idea of combining steel joist, wood framing and sheathing to form a combination steel/wood “Hybrid” roof system. Hoppy, with the help of Vulcraft’s structural engineers developed a roof system that currently is used on well over 75% of the flat warehouse/commercial/industrial roof systems on the West Coast. Through the years Hoppy has been active with the APA, the AITC and is a founding member of the Structural Roof Erectors Association. He currently assists the “Woodworks” group from time to time.
