A Detailing Deep Dive: Fire, Acoustics and Structural Detailing in Mid-Rise Multi-Family

July 22, 2021 – 11:00 am - 1:30 pm

,

$40

This online event begins at 11:00 EDT, 10:00 CDT, 9:00 MDT, 8:00 PDT.

Step up your detailing game with this wood design workshop! What is the most economical unit demising wall assembly in a multi-family building? How do you detail the intersection of corridor walls and unit demising walls? How can you detail a head of corridor wall to underside of floor assembly while maintaining code requirements for fire-resistance continuity, minimizing acoustics flanking, and transferring structural loads for shear walls?

If you have questions like this, you won’t want to miss this highly interactive event focused on practical solutions for real world challenges. Join us online to engage in a step-by-step discussion of how to design and detail common interior wall assemblies and wall intersections in mid-rise multi-family wood structures. We’ll analyze example details and assemblies, contrast different assembly options, learn how to make modifications to tested wall assemblies, and look at tools you can use to evaluate your options.

 WoodWorks Speakers:

Ricky McLain, PE, SE, Senior Technical Director – Tall Wood

Ricky is WoodWorks’ in-house expert on tall wood buildings, providing analysis and guidance on architectural, fire and life safety, and structural design topics related to tall mass timber projects. He supports the AEC community both directly and collaboratively with WoodWorks Regional Directors, and guides the development of education and resources related to tall wood buildings in the U.S. Prior to this emphasis, Ricky’s role encompassed all building types and wood systems. He also has extensive experience in lead engineer roles related to structural design, project management and construction administration. Ricky is very active as a member of numerous committees and councils related to building design and is the Executive Director of the Structural Engineers Association of Vermont.

Chelsea Drenick, SE, Regional Director | CA-North, NV, UT

Chelsea is a licensed structural engineer in the state of California. She received her BS in Engineering from Harvey Mudd College and MS in Civil Engineering from Stanford University. Chelsea spent nine years in structural design consulting prior to joining WoodWorks. Her experience is in a variety of sectors including residential, higher education and retrofit of existing and historic structures. She is passionate about sustainability and the use of wood as a building material to reduce the embodied carbon emissions of structures.

Laura Cullen, EIT, Regional Director | GA, MS

Laura Cullen is passionate about educating others on the benefits of building with wood. Prior to joining WoodWorks, Laura worked as a structural designer for seven years. Her previous structural design experience focused primarily on mixed-use and multi-family structures, as well as K-12 schools. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Berry College. Laura is based in the Atlanta area, where she is a member of CREW Atlanta, a business network for the commercial real estate market, and a 2018 graduate of Leadership CREW.

Anthony Harvey, PE, Regional Director | OH, IN, KY, MI

A licensed Professional Engineer in Kentucky, Anthony received his BS and MS in Civil Engineering from the University of Kentucky, both with structural specialization. Before joining WoodWorks, he spent more than a decade working as a design consultant. He has experience in structural design, 3D modeling and detailing (REVIT), construction administration, inspections, and project management for a variety of project types, including: healthcare, office, retail, K-12/higher education, historical, industrial/distillery, municipal, military, multi-family, and mixed-used buildings. Anthony is also a Major in the United States Army Reserve where, as an Engineer Officer, he has held various leadership and staff positions.

Janelle Leafblad, PE, Regional Director | OR, AK, HI, ID, WA

Janelle has been an active building technology consultant since 2002, primarily in the area of wood technology, investigation and design of building envelope components, and construction for both historic and contemporary structures.
