Webinar – Part 2: Shear Wall Design in Cantilever Diaphragm Structures

This month’s special 4-part webinar series is a chance to gain expertise on open-front or corridor-only shear wall diaphragms. It’s presented by one of the foremost experts in the field, Terry Malone, who literally wrote the book on irregular diaphragms.

Part 2 / Feb 6 – This webinar introduces an open front diaphragm design example that will be worked through for the rest of the series. Topics will include seismic force calculation and distribution, and preliminary shear wall design taking into account nominal shear wall stiffness. The impact of factors such as horizontal and torsional irregularities on force distribution to shear walls will be examined, and design of elements contributing to shear wall rotation and overturning will be discussed. The effect of gravity loads on shear walls will also be reviewed.

Terry Malone, PE, SE, WoodWorks
Terry is a licensed structural engineer in Washington, Oregon and Arizona. Prior to joining WoodWorks, he was a principal in consulting structural engineering firms in Washington and Oregon, conducted third-party structural plan reviews and has served as a faculty member at St. Martin’s College in Lacey, Washington. Terry has over 35 years of wood design experience and has taken an active role as a presenter providing seminars at state and local ICC chapters and professional engineering organizations. Terry is author of The Analysis of Irregular Shaped Structures: Diaphragms and Shear Walls, published by McGraw-Hill and ICC. He is a member of the Structural Engineers’ Association of Arizona and the International Code Council.
Attendees will qualify for 1 AIA/CES HSW LU, 1 PDH credit or 0.1 ICC credit (FBPE board-approved).
