Correcting Misperceptions of Mass Timber Fire Performance

This presentation aims to answer common questions about mass timber fire performance while differentiating design strategies associated with low to mid-rise vs. tall wood structures. Because products such as CLT are relatively new in the U.S., designers often have to explain the fire design of mass timber projects to building officials in more detail than with other construction materials, even for code-compliant buildings. This session will equip architects, engineers, fire protection engineers, code consultants and designers with a better understanding of the code requirements, fire design methods, test standards and available testing related to fire performance of CLT and other mass timber products. It will also cover code provisions recently approved for the 2021 IBC that will allow mass timber buildings up to 18 stories. Unique aspects of tall timber fire design will be reviewed, including “delamination,” non-combustible coverings of mass timber elements, and fire-resistance ratings.
