Structural Engineering for Modern Wood Projects: Vibration, Shrinkage, and Off-Site Fabricated Components

As construction techniques, materials, and owner/occupant expectations continually evolve, so must the structural engineer’s approach to project design. This workshop brings together three experts to discuss areas of multi-family and commercial structural wood design that are often misunderstood. First, a WoodWorks expert will discuss best practices for designing wood-frame floors for vibration and accommodating wood shrinkage in multi-story structures, with a focus on design resources and effective detailing. Next, a wood truss and component manufacturing consultant will highlight the Structural Engineer of Record’s role in metal plate-connected wood truss design. Topics will include rules of thumb and best practices for design of trusses including preliminary depths, bracing requirements and coordination between the design team and truss manufacturer. Finally, a structural engineer with expertise in modular and panelized wood design will examine the unique structural considerations for these systems and the differences in design approach from traditional, on-site construction methods.



Scott Breneman, PhD, PE, SE, WoodWorks

Scott Breneman is a licensed Structural Engineer and Professional Engineer in the State of California and Senior Technical Director of the Project Resources & Solutions Division Team of WoodWorks. Scott received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Florida and a doctorate from Stanford University. His doctoral research entailed novel methods to reduce seismic damage to mid-rise and high-rise-frame buildings. Scott has experience with the structural design of new single-family, multi-family and mixed-used buildings; the seismic rehabilitation of institutional buildings in California; and high-end analysis and technology development. Scott is a Director on the Executive Board of the Structural Engineers Association of California, Past President of the Structural Engineers Association of Central California, an Associate Member of the ASCE/SEI 7-16 Seismic Sub-committee and Member of the ASCE/SEI Design of Wood Structures Committee.

Ben Hershey, 4Ward Consulting Group, LLC

Ben is the CEO of 4Ward Consulting Group, LLC, a leading provider of Lean Management and Manufacturing Consulting to the structural component and lumber industries. Ben has owned and operated several large component plants, manufacturing operations and distribution companies, and is Six Sigma Black Belt Certified. He has provided consulting to hundreds of manufacturers, from startups to transitioning operations, and standard component plants to more modern panelization/modular operations. He is a Past President of the Structural Building Components Association, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of several companies and organizations.

Ralph Tavares, PE, R&S Tavares Associates, Inc.

Ralph has been involved with prefabricated and hybrid-fabrication models of construction since 1987, and is one of the country’s foremost authorities on modular structures and fabrication processes. He has consulted with internationally known corporations in bringing overseas prefabrication technologies to the US. Ralph holds professional engineering licenses in 42 States, and serves on the Modular Building Institute’s Education Foundation panel in order to promote and educate others on the advantages of modular construction.
