Structural Design for Wind Loads: An Overview of Engineering Considerations for Wood Buildings

This course is intended for structural engineers and building designers seeking an overview of design steps, considerations and detailing best practices related to the wind-resistive design and analysis of non-residential and multi-family wood buildings. Developed in response to the fact that engineering curricula does not typically include a wood design course, it provides an overview of relevant 2012 International Building Code (IBC) provisions and American Wood Council (AWC)-referenced standards, a discussion of common design errors, and guidance related to load path continuity, shear walls, diaphragms, and uplift restraint. Topics covered in detail include:
- 2012 IBC and AWC-referenced standards applicable to wood-frame wind-resisting systems
- Uplift-resistant design solutions, including combined shear and uplift
- Out-of-plane wall design for wind loads, including tall walls, gable end walls, and tall walls with large openings, as well as deflection criteria for a variety of wall finishes
- Design and stiffness assumptions for rigid, semi-rigid and flexible diaphragms
- Diaphragm deflection and design of components such as chords and collectors
- Shear wall design methods, including segmented, perforated and force transfer around openings
- Design of shear wall components, including holdowns and drag struts
- Multi-story wood-frame design example for high winds, including accommodation of accumulated forces and deflections as well as design and detailing for wood’s interface with concrete podiums and foundations
Attendees can expect a top-to-bottom discussion of all aspects of wood-frame wind-resisting systems.

Lori Koch, P.E., American Wood Council
Lori is a Project Engineer with the American Wood Council, where she assists in the development of codes and standards, answers helpdesk inquiries, provides outreach and education, and generally promotes the use of wood in safe and sustainable buildings. After earning a BS in Civil Engineering from Penn State University and an MS in Civil Engineering from Clemson University, Lori worked as a forensic structural engineer with SK&A in Washington, DC. She then enrolled at Virginia Tech, where she earned a Master of Forestry degree in the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products (now the Department of Sustainable Biomaterials). She is a licensed Professional Engineer in Virginia.il.
Sherry Mundell, PE, WoodWorks
Sherry received her BS in Architectural Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999 and has been an active structural design consultant for 12 years. Her primary experience includes structural calculations, design, construction document preparation, and construction administration for new and existing commercial buildings. Her project experience includes hospitals, medical office buildings, schools and universities, movie theaters, art and natural history museums, aquatic facilities, a semi-conductor manufacturing plant, telecommunications towers, cooperative student housing, retail shopping developments, restaurants, banks, hotels, and mid-rise and high-rise multi-family buildings. Sherry is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Texas and a member of the Structural Engineers Association of Texas.
Ricky McLain, P.E., S.E., WoodWorks
Ricky is a licensed Structural Engineer and Professional Engineer in the states of New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, and is a Technical Director of Architectural and Engineering Solutions for the WoodWorks program. He has extensive experience in lead engineer roles related to the structural design, project management and construction administration of new single-family, multi-family, municipal, industrial, and mixed-used buildings. Before joining WoodWorks, Ricky was a Senior Structural Engineer for a New England-based consultant, working on projects in the Northeast from Maine to Maryland. He is Executive Director of the Structural Engineers Association of Vermont and is a member of the ASCE Structural Wind Engineering Committee. Ricky received a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Maine and an MS in Structural Engineering from Norwich University.
