Innovations in Wood Design: Trends for a Sustainable Future

This course will review innovative wood products and examine how the use of wood as a structural material in buildings positively impacts their carbon footprint. Attendees will learn about North American forests, effects of harvesting practices over the past 100 years and how responsible forest management can lead to positive environmental impacts. Sustainability of building and material design and selection will be reviewed using life cycle assessment (LCA). The use of wood framing in school construction will be highlighted to demonstrate its cost effectiveness in real-world projects. Cross laminated timber (CLT) framing systems and details incorporating its use will also be reviewed, along with historical context, project examples and benefits of use.
