How to: Intermediate Level Course on Type III and Type V Mid-Rise Wood-Frame Design

This course is intended for structural engineers and architects who are familiar with the design of low-rise wood buildings up to three stories, or taller buildings constructed of other materials, but are seeking a full system understanding of the unique design considerations associated with 4-6 story, Type III and Type V wood structures. Structural design steps, considerations, and detailing best practices related to both gravity and lateral analysis will be covered. Architectural design and detailing topics specific to fire and life safety will also be reviewed at length, including floor-to-wall details, shaft walls, fire walls, and the intersection of two rated assemblies. Developed in response to a growing interest in mid-rise Type III and Type V projects, this course goes beyond code provisions and focuses on the “how-to” associated with the design of these wood-frame buildings.
