An Overview of Wood Building Design
This presentation will provide a review of allowable uses and best design practices associated with wood-frame construction. It will begin with a discussion of wood science, including wood’s cell structure and moisture interaction properties. Structural wood design for vertical (gravity) loads, including bending, shear, deflection, vibration, tension, compression and connections, will then be introduced, along with common wood-frame lateral force-resisting systems and the components included in wood shear walls. Architectural considerations associated with wood framing will be examined, including fire protection and sprinklers, construction types, acoustics, and building envelope. Design and detailing best practices for wood-frame buildings will also be explained in an effort to highlight elements that play an important role in the construction process and ultimate building performance.
Design Considerations for Durable Wood Structures
With proper design, detailing and specification, wood structures can provide long and useful service lives while also offering a reduced environmental footprint. The key is careful planning and understanding of environmental loads and other external factors likely to impact a building over its lifetime. This presentation provides an overview of considerations related to durable wood design, including moisture management techniques, preservative treatment specification, and details for controlling termites.
