Multi-story Wood-frame Structures – How to Build Bigger and Taller

This seminar offers a detailed analysis of Type III and V building types and how they are utilized to create structures with five plus stories of wood-frame construction under the International Building Code. Provided by an expert in wood design and engineering, it will cover height and area provisions in depth, including podiums and mezzanines.
Discussion will also include common detailing choices at exterior walls to accommodate fire, structural and aesthetic requirements. As well, methods for calculating and accommodating for shrinkage in wood buildings will be reviewed. Examples of various building configurations and site layouts will be used to illustrate common methods for increasing unit density.

- Identify International Building Code (IBC) maximum height and associated allowable areas for wood-frame structures including allowances from the special design provisions
- Recognize common detailing used for exterior wall-to-floor intersections across the country for multi-story structures
- Calculate overall building shrinkage and understand how to minimize and compensate for its effects
- Evaluate examples of mid-rise wood buildings with an emphasis on configurations and site layouts
