The European Experience: Wood and Energy Efficiency

In Europe, many building designers are turning to wood to help achieve ambitious energy-reduction goals—because of its low embodied energy, thermal performance and ability to create an airtight envelope—and because wood buildings are increasingly thought to contribute to the health and wellbeing of occupants. In this presentation, architect Martin Despang will use the ‘Ecowoodbox Kindergarten’ in Hannover, Germany to demonstrate the use of evidence-based Design (EPD) and life cycle assessment (LCA) to improve environmental performance. He will also highlight research showing how Passive House design methodologies can be applied in the US.

Martin Despang, is an international practicing and teaching expert in emerging architecture with a special expertise in wood tectonics and technology. Martin earned his Master’s from the University of Hannover and is a licensed architect in his native Germany with offices in Dresden, Munich and Hannover. Mr. Despang is also a professor for the field of Critical Practice at the College of Architecture at the University of Arizona. His work has been widely published and awarded in Europe, Asia, South and North America with his solid timber ILMASI School for Mentally Disabled Children nominated for an INDEX: Design to Improve Life Award and his Ecowoodbox Passive House Kindergarten featured in the Phaidon Atlas of 21st Century World Architecture. Martin is a pioneering expert in Thermally Modified Timber technology and a keynote speaker at the European TMT conferences in evidence base design and life cycle assessment.


Construction Details and On-site Considerations for Mid-rise Wood Buildings

The seminar will explore typical wood-frame construction details and field modifications that impact the performance of multi-story wood buildings. Field examples will be used to highlight appropriate code provisions with an emphasis on shrinkage considerations when specifying dissimilar materials. Both structural and non-structural building elements will be reviewed, along with exterior wood products.

Frank Stewart is the Technical Support Manager for the Western Wood Products Association (WWPA) in Portland. He has been with the Association since 1976, providing product and technical support to lumber users throughout the world and helping to administer WWPA’s education and technical support activities. Before joining WWPA, Stewart worked in lumber retailing and residential construction. He holds a degree in business from Kansas State University and is a member of the International Code Council and Construction Specifications Institute.


All-wood and Hybrid Panelized Roof Systems: Cost-effective Roof Solutions

Although panelized roof systems are especially popular in industrial building applications on the west coast, they can be used to reduce building costs in retail, commercial and office applications all over the US. Learn why panelized roof systems are so cost-effective and how to efficiently design and install them. Other topics will include solutions for structural loading, fire protection and constructability, as well as additional benefits and design resources.

Mark Dalton is a

licensed professional engineer in several western states and a structural engineer in Utah. Prior to joining WoodWorks as the Senior Technical Director for Texas, he worked at Panelized Structures where he co-developed the “hybrid” panelized roof system and was involved in its engineering, sales and promotion. Since starting his career in 1983, he has also worked for Varco-Pruden Buildings, Vulcraft and TCI Steel Joists, and has had his own consulting firm. Mark’s experience includes management, structural engineering, marketing, sales, estimating, design-build engineering services and customer service development. He received his BSCE degree from Utah State University.


The International Green Construction Code – Implications for Wood Construction
Dr. Jim Bowyer, University of Minnesota, Dovetail Partners, Inc.

This presentation will delve into provisions of the International Green Construction Code (IGCC), examining organization, fundamentals, and mandatory requirements vs. electives. A particular focus will be provisions regarding materials selection, and especially specification and use of wood. Language relative to use of LCA in building design and materials selection will also be examined. Similar provisions in ASHRAE 189.1, an alternative path for those following the IGCC, will be considered, as will required and voluntary elements of various green building programs and other code initiatives.

Dr. Jim Bowyer is Professor Emeritus at the University of Minnesota Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering. He is Director of the Sustainable Materials Program at Dovetail Partners, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides authoritative information about the impacts and trade-offs of environmental decisions, and President of Bowyer & Associates, Inc., a consulting firm dedicated to improving the environmental performance of organizations of all kinds.


Feel Good with Wood!
Cheryl Ciecko, AIA, ALA, LEED AP, WoodWorks

In recent years, a number of international scientific studies have explored the relationships between building materials and human health, and found the positive impact of wood materials on learning and healing. As a result, biophilia and evidence-based design are driving designs for schools, libraries, healthcare and religious facilities. In this presentation, case study examples will be used to illustrate these benefits while showing that environmental, material and labor costs involved in these projects are often significantly less than those for alternative materials. Forestry myths and facts will also be examined.

Cheryl A. Ciecko is a licensed architect and Senior Technical Director for WoodWorks in the central US. A specialist in sustainability issues, she is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Association of Licensed Architects (ALA) and a LEED AP. Cheryl has a BS in Architecture from the University of Illinois – Urbana with High Honors, and a Masters of Architecture from the University of Minnesota – Minneapolis.
