In 2009, the South Carolina Public School Facilities Committee reversed a long-standing policy when it voted to allow the use of wood in school construction. In 2008, Arkansas did the same, going so far as to change legislation that prohibited wood schools. As these decisions recognized, wood buildings can easily meet all code and safety requirements while offering numerous other advantages—from less expensive material costs to speed of construction, design versatility, and the ability to meet green building objectives—all while creating positive learning environments.
This workshop is being offered as a way for architects, engineers, builders and school officials in the U.S. south to learn about the use of wood in school construction. For more information download the Designing Wood Schools information sheet.
