Connection Solutions for Wood-frame Structures

One of the biggest eye openers for those new to the design of non-residential wood buildings is that designing and detailing the connections is not as complex as imagined. This seminar will feature an overview of common fastener types and the wood connection philosophies relevant to each. Topics will include techniques for designing efficient, durable and structurally safe connections, minimizing environmental effects on wood connections, simple design examples and available resources. Also included will be the latest information on timber rivet connections, which are underutilized yet offer advantages such as a clean and elegant look.

Ms. Kam-Biron is a California licensed structural engineer and Director of Education for the American Wood Council (AWC). Before joining AWC, she was Senior Technical Director – National Lead Mid-rise/Multi-family Construction for WoodWorks. She has over 20 years of experience managing and designing a wide range of projects in various structural materials as well as Division of State Architect contract plan review. Ms. Kam-Biron is a graduate of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with a BS in Architectural Engineering. She is an active member and past Director of the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California and a volunteer on the Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo Architectural Engineering Advisory Board.

Offset Diaphragms and Shear Walls

Lateral force resisting systems in today’s structures are much more complex than they were several decades ago, incorporating multiple horizontal and vertical offsets in the diaphragms, multiple irregularities, and fewer lateral resisting elements. This two-part presentation will provide a brief review of the method used to analyze these complex structures.

In Part I, topics will include code requirements, how to recognize diaphragm irregularities and discontinuities, how shears are distributed through complex diaphragms, the method of analysis used to solve the transfer of forces across areas of discontinuity, and the analysis of flexible wood sheathed or untopped steel decking diaphragms with horizontal offsets.

A continuation from Part I, the afternoon session will cover how to conduct a preliminary breakdown of a complex diaphragm to better understand the distribution of forces and assure that complete load paths are being established. Examples will be provided illustrating how to analyze in-plane and out-of-plane offset shear walls that are typically created by these diaphragms.

Mr. Malone is author of The Analysis of Irregular Shaped Structures: Diaphragms and Shear Walls. He was a practicing structural engineer in Tacoma, Washington for 17 years, after which he was a principal in consulting structural engineering firms in Washington and Oregon. Mr. Malone took an active role in mentoring and public education as a presenter with focus on understanding lateral systems, and also served as a faculty member at St. Martins College in Lacey, Washington. Mr. Malone currently performs third-party structural plan reviews and continues to provide seminars at state and local ICC chapters and professional engineering organizations. He is licensed in Washington, Oregon, and Arizona.

Building Height and Area Compliance with the California Building Code (Part I)
Allowable Building Height and Area Calculations Using Software (Part II)

Part I – This session is intended for design professionals who want to better understand how to successfully design multi-story wood buildings in compliance with the 2010 California Building Code (CBC). Focusing on allowable building height and area, it will cover Chapter 5 of the CBC with examples comparing buildings that are different in terms of their occupancy groups, construction types (Type III, IV and V) and design elements (e.g., yard vs. no yard, mezzanine, etc.). In particular, code sections that are commonly misinterpreted or overlooked will be discussed.

Part II – This session will focus on the “Check Height and Area” software application that reviews and analyses building height and area compliance with the 2007/2010 CBC for buildings up to six stories, with up to four occupancy groups at each level. This user-friendly application is created for design professionals and building officials to ease building code analysis. Step-by-step instructions will be provided and common issues related to height and area limitations will be illustrated with examples of actual mixed occupancy group, multi-story buildings.

Ara Sargsyan is an ICC Certified Building Official, Professional Civil Engineer, LEED Accredited Professional and California Licensed General Contractor. He is the Training Officer and a Supervising Plan Check Engineer at the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety. His professional experience also includes building code analysis, structural design, teaching civil engineering courses, research, and investigation of acoustical properties of building materials. A number of his research works in noise control and building construction have been published and some have been utilized as textbooks. Mr. Sargsyan is a graduate of the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute.

Advantages of Wall Panelizing in Mid-rise Wood Construction
Brian Larrabure, Larrabure Framing

Wall panelizing can reduce the cost of mid-rise building projects—including, contrary to popular belief, those with complex architectural designs. This presentation will provide an overview of the benefits that can be achieved with the use of panelized walls in multi-story wood buildings, including reduced labor costs, faster erection times and overall value engineering. Project team coordination, phasing of the panelized wall construction, sustainability and the advantages of BIM modeling will also be discussed, and examples of successful projects will be highlighted.

Brian Larrabure is the President and founder of Larrabure Framing in Chatsworth, CA. Established in 1997, the company is comprised of separate multi-family and housing divisions, performing work for national home builders, REITs and high-end owner-builders. Larrabure has worked with tower cranes since 1984 when they were first brought into the state. His multi-family division has completed over 10,000 units of five- and six-story Type III construction, and more than 20,000 units of two- to four-story Type V projects. Larrabure Framing has been using Building Information Modeling in their workflow since 2006 when they began panelizing their projects. Over 60 percent of their projects are mid-rise wood structures.

Systemized Construction for Mid-rise Wood Buildings

y to achieve higher density at lower cost while reducing carbon footprint. This presentation will cover the latest systems and innovations that enable developers and builders to construct mid-rise wood-frame buildings efficiently and to the highest quality standard. Topics will include the cumulative effects of shrinkage and building compression, how to address increased dead, live, wind and seismic loads, fire protection requirements, how to ensure dryness at lock-up, and the benefits of computerized modeling for both the structure and MEP systems during pre-construction.

Dave Fisher is Senior Vice President for Mitsui Homes Canada Inc. based in Langley, British Columbia. Prior to Mitsui, his positions included Vice President Solid Wood Group with the Ainsworth Lumber Company, Regional General Manager with Canadian Forest Products, and Wood Products Specialist with the Council of Forest Industries of BC. Dave served five years as a Director for the Greater Vancouver Home Builders Association and currently serves on the BC Government’s Wood First Advisory Committee. He has an Advanced Graduate Management Diploma and a Master of Business Administration degree from Athabasca University.

Efficient Use of Wood Framing in Retail Buildings

This presentation will explain the advantages of various structural wood products when used in retail buildings. Products discussed will include: wood trusses, wall panels, I-joists, glued laminated timber (glulam), and structural insulated panels (SIPs). These products will be examined from a variety of perspectives, including cost savings, sustainability, labor and time savings, and availability. Specific applications and product differences will be discussed.

Archie Landreman is a technical director for WoodWorks and manages the National Accounts Program. Active in the wood and structural building component industry since 1970, he has held various sales and sales management positions related to wood truss and engineered wood products. In particular, he has extensive experience with lumber, structural wood panels, prefabricated wall panels, wood trusses, engineered wood beams and I-joists. He is a member of numerous organizations, including the American Institute of Architects, Association of Licensed Architects, Construction Specifications Institute, Structural Engineers Association of Wisconsin, Structural Building Components Association, Structural Insulated Panel Association, and Forest Products Society.

LCT ONE: Case Study of an Eight-story Wood Office Building

This presentation will describe the Life Cycle Tower ONE (LCT ONE), an eight-story wood office building recently built in Austria. LCT ONE was the culmination of a research project that resulted in a system for building timber high-rises up to 30 stories. It is a solution that addresses climate change in the design and construction industry, beginning with the choice of a natural, renewable resource to replace steel, concrete and other fossil fuel-intensive materials. Topics will include the motivation, research and product development that preceded the construction of LCT ONE, as well as production of the floor and wall components and erection of the building envelope in just eight days.

Based in California and Austria, Nabih Tahan, AIA, specializes in energy-efficient design and timber construction. In 1992, he moved from Berkeley to Austria, where he was introduced to European energy efficiency and sustainable construction methods. He returned to the US in 2005 and introduced the Passive House Standard to California by retrofitting his home. Mr. Tahan has now joined the CREE team, and is helping this general contracting firm to adap

t its timber based ‘system approach’ method to the design and construction of schools, office buildings and residential projects in North America.

Using CLT in the US Today

This presentation will focus on how cross laminated timber (CLT) can and should be used under current building codes and standards. Topics will include what applications are likely to be the most cost effective and what designers need to be aware of when specifying CLT. The latest resources available for design and construction professionals will be reviewed, including the US CLT handbook due for release in January 2013. Frequently asked questions related to CLT will also be addressed.

Lisa Podesto is a California licensed professional engineer and Senior Technical Director for WoodWorks, as well as the National Lead for Building Systems. Prior to joining WoodWorks, Lisa was a Project Manager and Design Engineer specializing in wood design. She earned her BS in General Engineering from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo and her MS in Civil Engineering (emphasis in structural engineering) from San Francisco State University. She is the past State Chair of the Structural Engineers’ Association of California Sustainable Design Committee, and member of the American Society of Civil Engineers Structural Engineering Institute and the International Code Council.

Adventures in Engineering: Designing the Iconic Metropol Parasol
Jan-Peter Koppitz, Dipl-Ing, Eur Ing, MIstructE CEng, Ove Arup & Partners

Recognized around the world for its unusual geometry, the iconic Metropol Parasol in Seville, Spain is one of the world’s largest timber structures. This presentation by project engineer Jan-Peter Koppitz will trace what he calls the adventure of engineering this unique project. From the first sketches to the turn of the last screw, the design team—architects, structural engineers and wood specialists—found itself on an expedition in new technological and architectural territory. This could only be managed with a great deal of knowledge, experience and creativity, as well as the courage to pursue innovative, never-tried solutions.

Jan-Peter Koppitz is an Associate at Ove Arup & Partners, where he has worked since 2000, first in London and now in Madrid. From 2002-2005, he was a structural tutor at the prestigious Design Research Lab, AA in London and he now teaches at the School of Architecture, IE Business School in Madrid. He studied Civil Engineering at the BTU Cottbus in his native Germany after spending much of his youth living in the US.

Structural Durability: The Proper Use of Preservative Treated Wood

Wood buildings can be highly durable, lasting hundreds of years, provided they are built in a way that minimizes moisture exposure and potential wood deterioration. Preventing deterioration starts by diverting and controlling moisture through proper design using eaves, overhangs, orientation, flashing, spacing, column bases and other details. However, where moisture exposure to structural wood products cannot be prevented, preservative treated wood is required by building codes and must be specified. This presentation discusses how to specify and use preservative treated wood and illustrates relevant design details.

Tom Milton is an industry expert who provides technical assistance and educational programs to design professionals using structural wood products in non-residential and multi-family buildings. Tom’s experience includes work as a Technical Director for WoodWorks and severa

l years at APA, where he focused on promotion and training related to engineered wood products. He also spent 25 years as a forest products specialist with the University of Minnesota Extension Service, where he provided technical assistance and educational programs for the wood industry. Tom graduated from the University of Minnesota with Bachelor and Master degrees in forestry and wood science. He has lectured on and authored numerous articles on wood-related topics such as utilization, machining, marketing, preservation, selection, construction, and building codes.

Insulation Technologies and Installation Specifications for Better Energy Performance of Commercial Buildings

While new energy codes and green building programs are placing greater emphasis on energy efficiency, many ‘green buildings’ are being criticized because their energy performance has failed to live up to expectations. This presentation will focus on the performance characteristics of new and existing insulation technologies as well the importance of a well designed air barrier system. This interactive session is designed to sort through the myriad of insulation choices in order to match the best insulation system to the type of structure. Energy codes are for the first time requiring specific installation protocols for insulation. These requirements will be explained in order to help participants develop appropriate specifications—both to meet new codes and create buildings with better performance.

Steve Easley is an internationally recognized construction consultant specializing in solving building science-related problems and educating other design and building professionals. Known for cost-effective and practical approaches to building high-performance structures, his work focuses on increasing quality of construction, sustainability and reducing costly mistakes that lead to construction defects and call-backs.

Materials Matter: Design Trends for a Sustainable Future

Today, moving forward means looking back to traditional, natural materials and using them in new ways. Find out how wood materials provide solutions in terms of durability, fire, moisture and sustainability. Discover innovations that are allowing traditional wood materials and systems to be the solution of choice for a variety of building types, including four to six-story mid-rise buildings, cross laminated timber structures up to 15 stories and commercial structures of all types. Topics will also include life cycle assessment (LCA), Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), green building rating systems, forest certification and biophilia.

Cheryl A. Ciecko is a licensed architect and Senior Technical Director for WoodWorks in the central US. A specialist in sustainability issues, she is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Association of Licensed Architects (ALA) and a LEED AP. Cheryl has a BS in Architecture from the University of Illinois – Urbana with High Honors, and a Masters of Architecture from the University of Minnesota – Minneapolis.

Modular Wood Framing Goes Vertical

As with wood construction in general, innovative technologies are expanding the options for modular wood-frame buildings. No longer limited to one-story classrooms, work camps or single-family homes, there is a move to incorporate these factory-built units into applications such as hotels, dorms and condominiums that compete with four- and five-story podium design. This presentation w

ill focus on techniques that differentiate modular wood-frame construction from conventional, panelized or prefabricated wood framing methods, as well as cost and other advantages.

Troy E. Bean has more than 25 years of structural engineering and project management experience. Since joining DCI Engineers in 1989, he has designed a variety of municipal, industrial, commercial, and residential projects that have utilized wood, concrete, masonry, and light gauge and structural steel construction materials. Recently, he has provided services for numerous wood-framed modular projects, including several multi-story buildings for resorts and apartment complexes. He has completed modular projects in Washington and North Dakota as well as British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada.

Wood Podiums in Mid-rise Construction

Mid-rise podium construction, with multiple stories of wood framing over a concrete first story, has been popular for many years as a way to take advantage of wood’s cost effectiveness for the superstructure while maintaining a more traditional commercial construction type below. Recently, some innovative designers have chosen to forego concrete altogether and build the podium in wood—further decreasing their costs while speeding construction and creating less massive, more uniform buildings. This presentation will examine design considerations related to wood podiums such as durability, fire protection, sound transmission and seismic loads. Recent examples of projects in California will be highlighted.

Karyn Beebe, P.E., LEED AP, is an APA Engineered Wood Specialist serving the Southwest. A licensed Professional Engineer in the state of California, Beebe graduated from Purdue University with a BS in Civil Engineering. Her duties include consulting with designers on the efficient specification of engineered wood products in construction. She is an active member of the Structural Engineers Association and the US Green Building Council, and serves as Secretary for the San Diego Area Chapter of the ICC. Prior to joining APA, Beebe worked as a structural engineer and structural plan reviewer for the San Diego building department.

Understanding the Design Requirements for Five-story Wood-framed Construction

This presentation will unravel the mystery of how to design five-story wood-frame residential buildings and six-story mixed-use projects within the International Building Code (IBC). Discussion will provide an architect’s point of view on code requirements with an emphasis on height and area limitations. Topics will also include technical challenges such as how to design for wind and seismic forces, how to control shrinkage, and enhanced fire protection requirements.

Tim Smith is the founding Principal of Togawa Smith Martin, Inc. in Los Angeles, California. His firm specializes in all types of multi-family and

mixed-use housing including market rate, affordable, senior housing and student housing. With more than 35 years of architectural expertise behind it, his firm has designed over 30,000 housing units throughout the Western United States. Mr. Smith is credited with the development of the first five-story wood Type III housing project in California in 1994. Since then, he has pioneered the use of five-story wood framing in nine building jurisdictions throughout California.

Meeting Fire Codes with Oriented Strand Board (OSB)

This presentation will provide an overview of fire-rated cementitious coated oriented strand board (OSB) sheathing for wall and roof sheathing applications. Topics will include its structural and performance properties and contribution to enhancing the sustainable built environment.

Karsten Vardas has been in the building industry for over 20 years. As District Sales Manager for LP Building Products, he provides technical assistance and education to architects, engineers, and contractors in Northern California.

Sustainable Designs: Western Red Cedar

This presentation will focus on the sustainable nature of Western Red Cedar wood products. It will include an overview of the features and benefits of this natural forest product with an emphasis on grades, product specifications, installation, finishing, and maintenance. Participants can expect to gain a greater appreciation of Western Red Cedar’s versatility and the enhanced appeal it can bring to both commercial and residential designs, as well as the latest design trends. Finally, this session will also touch on forest certification systems and the attributes that make wood an inherently ‘green’ building material.

Paul Mackie is the Western District Manager for the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association. Known as ‘Mr. Cedar,’ he is a fourth-generation lumberman and one of North America’s foremost authorities on Western Red Cedar as a building material.

Timber Framing: A Time-Honored Craft Approach for High Quality, Sustainable, Commercial Construction
Mack Magee, PE, FraserWood Industries

Timber framing, an ancient tradition revived in North America in the 1970s, has been contributing to the sustainability of buildings since before sustainability was in vogue. Timber framing makes use of the only truly renewable structural building material—one that sequesters significant amounts of carbon and may contribute to a neutral or even negative carbon footprint. This presentation will cover why and how to integrate a timber-frame solution into your next commercial project, enabling you to reduce its environmental impacts while delivering a warm, expressive structure. Topics will include material choices, joinery decisions, finishes, embellishments, code compliance and getting started in design, as well as commercial project examples.

Before obtaining his BS and MS in Civil Engineering from Stanford University, Mack Magee worked as a journeyman carpenter in downtown Chicago high-rise construction. After graduating, he joined Owens Corning, where he held a number of positions in production, sourcing, and corporate engineering. This was followed by positions as Director of Operations for Riverbend Timber Framing and General Manager of Cascade Joinery. In 2006, Mack partnered with Ben Brungraber to establish Fire Tower Engineered Timber, a heavy timber specialty engineering firm. In addition to his role at Fire Tower, Mack is a partner in FraserWood Industries, a BC-based glulam and solid sawn timber manufacturer and fabricator.

Use of CLT in North America: A Project Benefit Review

This presentation will provide a review of 2012 North American building projects using cross laminated timber (CLT). A project overview will be given for each focusing on the use of CLT as a roof, floor, wall, beam, or architectural element. Topics will include factors that influence the decision to use CLT and the benefits derived through each part of the project development.

Kris Spickler is the Heavy Timber Specialist for Structurlam Products Ltd. in Penticton, British Columbia. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, with emphasis on wood structural design, from Fresno State University, California. A licensed California Professional Engineer since 1981, he has worked in the engineered wood products industry for 30 years, the last fifteen of which have been focused on heavy timber design and fabrication. As a new product specialist, he was instrumental in introducing Parallam and TimberStrand to the US market, and is now focused on the introduction of CLT to US design and building professionals.

Fire-Retardant-Treated Wood and the International Building Code

This presentation takes an in-depth look at fire-retardant treated wood (FRTW) focusing on: FRTW characteristics, properties and performance in a fire; preparation, treatment, inspection and labeling; fire tests, standards and building code requirements; how and where FRTW is used; and the impact of FRTW on construction and insurance costs.

Richard Geary is President of Richard W. Geary & Associates, Inc., a softwood lumber consulting firm in Southern California. He has extensive experience in softwood lumber and construction, serving with the Western Wood Products Association for more than 27 years. He holds credentials in all aspects of western lumber use, including production, sources, grades, specifications, engineering, wood technology, fire retardant preservative treatments, construction, application, storage and marketing. Rich is a member of the International Code Council, San Diego Area Chapter of the ICC, the Orange Empire Chapter of the ICC, and the Los Angeles Basin Chapter of the ICC where he serves on the Structural Code Committee. He also serves on the Southern California Fire Prevention Officers Wildland-Urban Interface Committee.

Structural Wood-to-wood Fasteners
Brice Hereford, FastenMaster

Geared toward design professionals, building officials and contractors, this presentation will provide an overview of the fastening and connection requirements for wood structural members to resist the loads imposed in wood-frame construction. Topics will include how connections are affected by wood properties, moisture content, loading direction and dowel bearing strength, as well as the evolution of fasteners, strength properties, and other features. The recent development of structural wood screws and their use in various applications will also be discussed.

Brice Hereford is a Certified Sustainable Designer whose interest in energy efficiency goes back to the energy crisis of the 1970s. His focus is on building envelope design, structure and the necessity of excellent air-sealing and insulation both inside and outside the cavity. As the Code Compliance Specialist for FastenMaster, he works with the code community to educate code officials as well as builders, architects and engineers throughout the country in seeking more cost-effective and stronger connections using code compliant structural wood screws. He is a graduate of the Boston Architectural College’s Sustainable Design Certificate program.
